Samantha Cash is a Pepperdine Beach Volleyball alumni, who completed her undergraduate degree in 2015 and completed graduate school at Pepperdine in 2016! Let's see what's new with Samantha!
What did you do and where did you go in the first 30 days following graduation?
“After Gulf Shores, we came back in time for graduation. I then took some time off to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with my family. I was also preparing for my first season of indoor professional volleyball. My first contract was in a suburb of Madrid. The season was from August to May.”
What is the weirdest thing about being 30?
“How much I love it. There is such a stigma against growing older as a woman especially, but I find that I love my 30s and every year I feel like I am a better version of myself.”
Do you notice yourself becoming your parents yet?
“For sure. I already was my dad. Even Nina commented on it at one point when she saw us interacting. We both hyperfocus on things. He is super into cutting his own gems at the moment.”
If you had to guess, where are you going to be living and what are you going to be doing when you’re 45?
“Hopefully, I’ll be teaching. Today, I was informed that a house that is condemned and full of sewage in my area of San Diego is $800,000. So housing is complicated with no clear answer for me at the moment.”
Do you use your major in your real life?
“I majored in Film Studies and did a grad degree in my fifth year for Education and Learning Technologies. I recently went back to grad school to get a teaching degree. I am doing an online grad school program. For Christmas, I received Elton John tickets for his Glasgow concert, so I wanted to make sure I was geographically nimble. If you know you are going to get to the same place in the end, take the road that makes you happier. While I’m not directly involved in making cinema at the moment, I find that I use my degree every day because it improved my media literacy.”
What have you been doing now that you are done with your professional volleyball career?
“I would like to start playing beach again. I recently did a log-throwing competition…I won. It was really fun. I also go backpacking quite frequently. I have also continued my passion for painting.”
What is something you need help with right now?
“Passing my RICA examination. I am taking it tomorrow. If I pass it, I get to become a student teacher.”
What is something fun you did this year?
“I love to support my family, especially my sisters. One of the ways we spend time together is getting together for “gala season” in NYC twice a year. My older sister is very involved with Central Park, so we get to help fundraise and celebrate it, while also dressing up and looking fantastic. Everyone needs an excuse to wear a fancy dress. One of my favorite events was the Central Park Winter Gala, as it was Wizard of Oz-themed. My sisters and I turned it into a fun arts-and-craft bonding moment as well, by ordering cheap yellow purses online and bedazzling them. They were made to look like the Yellow Brick Road when we held them all together.”
How can people get a hold of you?
