This publication serves as an introduction to identifying herbaceous plants in the forests and woodlands of Kansas and to help readers interpret what those plants indicate about the ecological conditions of plant communities.

January marks the season 4 premier of the Kansas Canopy Podcast! This month, we are joined by  Community Forestry Program Coordinator, Matt Norville. Matt will guide us through the dos and don'ts of young tree pruning and explain why this practice matters for our trees' health and growth.

Featured Tree: Wooly Buckthorn

Sideroxylon lanuginosum is native to southeast and south central Kansas. With many common names and morphological variability, wooly buckthorn can take either tree or shrub form. The Kiowa tribe used the latex in the outer layers of bark for a chewing gum. The Kansas champion can be found in Sedgwick County.

We are excited to welcome five new staff members to our agency! At the end of 2023, we welcomed four Forestry Technicians; Matt, Ashleigh, Kody and Colton. In January we welcomed a new Northeast Community Forester, Blaine. You can read short bios about these new team members on our website.
