A one-of-a-kind masterpiece in Gramercy Park. The “Joseph B Thomas House,” named after its owner, who amassed his fortune in the sugar business has been moved, dismantled, shipped, re-assembled, relocated, foreclosed, auctioned, relisted, and preserved to maintain much of the home's original details. An epic story of townhome proportions…

Built in the 17th century by Dutch owners in Amsterdam, the structure was dismantled and shipped to the Upper West Side in 1845 and relocated in 1910, to Gramercy Park and completed by English architect Frederick J. Sterner. By the end of 1910, Sterner had reworked this mid-19th century house into a fantastical, Gothic monolith.

The first floor, comprised of stone, supported four stories of multi-colored brick, laid in a modified Flemish bond pattern. “Diamond-paned windows topped by flat-headed Gothic eyebrows, a stepped gable that with crouching gargoyles and a carved coat of arms carried out the Gothic motif. An elaborate row of stained-glass windows behind carved patterns marked the dining room."

And the living room…or the “Italian Room” with its “massive barrel-vaulted ceiling, delicate plasterwork, wood paneled walls, and massive stone fireplace” was tailor-made for a very Big Sit.

Beyond the living room and its huge stained glass Renaissance windowed wall is a palace-style garden with a fountain and interior plantings under a glass solarium roof. Below the living room, down a special staircase, is an amazing wine cellar and bacchanal tasting room…also classically convenient for leisurely Big Sits.

Still remaining fully intact, its most recent owner was a world-famous fashion designer, Oleg Cassini, who designed and dressed many notable women including Jackie Kennedy. After Oleg passed away in 2006, an intense family feud ensued, and the property was foreclosed upon and auctioned for $5M to a lone bidder in October of 2022. What a purchase!

This home is a piece of history that spans continents and generations, with as dramatic a design as the story behind it.
