hello, 2500+ pals:
fellow queers + feminists +
open-hearted world-changer clients.

Many of you have been asking me how to speak up on issues/crises “when it doesn't ”fit" with what my business and I are known for" or “when I don't know that much about it?” or “if it seems performative?” “unnecessarily divisive?”

I say: find your authentic, heart-felt connection to the issue:

Ex. A fancy yoga studio might put up a sign that says “News about [X] un-nerving you? (Us too.) Let's flow together. 20% now goes to X cause.”

Ex. A sex therapist can talk on a podcast, or in her newsletter, about the negative impacts [of “isms” or climate anxiety or a scary law] on romance, love and intimacy. And offer some advice.

Ex. I recently saw an animal rights activist focusing on homeless cats in Gaza; his way to bring attention to the crisis. Another used her usual climate angle to expose bomb emissions in the region.

Of course, some causes are so important, we speak on them without a savvy link.(Tips below.)

SIDE EFFECTS of SPEAKING UP
Caring about justice becomes part of what you're known for aka your "brand." Yes, you might lose some followers; but in my experience, you gain way more justice-oriented ones. And they're more deeply committed to your work. Since you align.

In case you need some oomph, John-John Williams IV, a journalist and DEI collaborator buddy, told my clients this week, “I've always spoken up and I've always kept my jobs.”  WHOOSH.

xoxo,

p.s.s. If you're craving insight on how to talk about today's issues, below is my guidance. Originally created for my 34 participants in the Future Thought Leader program, but sharing it widely now:
