Happy New Year, First name / friend! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are excited about new opportunities in 2024. After spending the past two weeks sick with COVID, I'm ready to get back to proofreading for my clients and creating content for The Proofreader Greenhouse. Here's to a year of growth and endless possibilities!
๐๏ธ Topics for2024: Which ones are you interested in? ๐
I'm planning some exciting things for The Proofreader Greenhouse in 2024, and I can't wait to reveal my plans to you soon! Here's a sneak peek at the topics I'm excited about exploring with you this year:
getting (and keeping) clients
managing your time (business and personal)
organizing your proofreading or editing projects
spotting errors in your clients' files and your own writing
staying focused while proofreading or editing
Which of these topics are you most interested in? Please reply to this email and let me know.
Catch of the Week:
To do something โon the down-lowโ is to do it in secrecy. Notice that a hyphen is needed between โdownโ and low."๐ก
This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor:
Jill from Align Editing
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
What type of content do you proofread or edit? Thrillers and romance (books). I've also proofed/edited website content for small businesses.
Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I completed the High-Level Proofreading and Copyediting Pro course through Edit Republic. I'm currently enrolled in a transcript proofreading course with Elizabeth Wiegner and plan to finish that by the end of February.
What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? The community! In my experience, editors and proofreaders are very willing to give thoughtful advice, provide encouragement, or even just lend an ear. Being newer to the field, I'm beyond thankful to be surrounded by such supportive people.
What causes you the most frustration in your business? I've found that it's not easy to find clients! Many editing opportunities require years of experience, which is hard to achieve without experience (lol). My goal for 2024 is to become more consistent with posting on social media which will hopefully lead to making more genuine connections.
What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors? Time blocking works! With three kids, two dogs, a husband who travels for work, a part-time job, and starting another business with my daughter in 2023, I need to block chunks of time to work IN and ON my editing business. Having a schedule and daily routine helps ensure I knock things off my to-do list.
