Welcome to Notes From Natty - our standing Friday morning coffee date (inbox style of course) where you get a weekly digest of stories, writing tips and a round up of the latest at Natty Writes. Grab your cup (I’ve got mine ☕️) & let’s dig in ⬇️

For most of my life, I’ve told myself that I’m not athletic which means that I also have never been someone who consistently works out or goes to the gym.

I didn’t play sports growing up (well… I tried most of them and it was an epic fail 🤣) and I am 100% a “yay sports” girl through and through.

But as I got older and went to college and moved into adulthood, I found myself WANTING to be the person that had some sort of exercise routine.

After all, that’s the healthy thing to do, right? Both physically and mentally.

Because I had told myself all of these years that I just wasn’t athletic, I truly believed that I could NEVER become someone who worked out consistently.

Until I realized… it’s really not about my skill level at all. (Admittedly, the only machine I know how to use in a gym is the treadmill.)

It’s about choosing some type of exercise and making it a HABIT. Once it was a habit, the better I could get at it.

It wasn’t until 2022 that I FINALLY picked something and actually stuck with it.

Now, my exercise of choice is walking (😂) so don’t come for me – and don’t underestimate the benefits of daily walks, ok?!

2 years later, it’s something I STILL do almost every single day. And here’s why: it included the 4 Laws of Behavior Change that James Clear says must be present in order to implement a new habit in your life:
  1. Make it obvious
  2. Make it attractive
  3. Make it easy
  4. Make it satisfying
I made it obvious by setting out my walking clothes the night before.

It was attractive because I chose an outdoor walking area and there’s nothing like the beginning of Spring in Georgia to make you want to get outside.

It was easy because it was ONLY one mile a day.

And it was satisfying because I was doing it as a part of a Mile a Day March challenge and I checked off a box every day.

So why am I telling you this? Because I believe the same is true for creating content in your business.

It’s more of a HABIT than it is a SKILL!

The more that you do it, the more that you’ll get better at it, but you can’t get better at it until you start doing it.

A lot of times people tell me that they haven’t started blogging in their business consistently because they “don’t know what to write about” or they “aren’t a good writer.”

But I’m here to say that’s really not it at all. It’s more of a mental game than anything.

Every action we take on a daily basis stems from some sort of habit we’ve created – whether we realize it or not.

For now, I want to zoom into Law #2 from above – making it attractive – to help you see how this works.

How To Promote Your Blogs via Email (WITH Examples)

For many of us, the attractive thing that we’ve created a habit around in our business is posting on social media and spending a lottttt of our time there.

And it makes sense. When you post on social media, you anticipate the engagement that you might receive, which naturally releases dopamine.

In Atomic Habits, James Clear explains that dopamine is not only released when you experience pleasure (receiving likes on Instagram), but also when you anticipate it (thinking about receiving likes on Instagram).

Whenever you predict that an opportunity will be rewarding, your levels of dopamine spike in anticipation. And whenever dopamine rises, so does your motivation to act.

It’s the anticipation of a reward - NOT the fulfillment of it - that gets us into action.

So with that in mind, it’s time to start anticipating what’s possible when you consistently commit to creating content in your business in the form of blogs.

Sure, they’re a longer game play than posting on social media – you’re not going to receive the instant gratification of likes, comments, and DM’s.

But what can you anticipate INSTEAD?

➡️ Is it an inquiry from your website from a completely cold lead who found you solely on Google?

That just happened to me this past weekend and I can confirm – that’s a better dopamine hit than any like I’ve ever received on social media.

➡️ Is it populating higher in Google search results for a blog topic that you poured your heart and soul into?

➡️ Is it your audience finally recognizing you as a go-to person for information and education in your industry?

➡️ Is it finally being able to release the pressure of needing to be on social media 24/7 because you know you’re providing value for your audience elsewhere?

➡️ Is it growing your email list from one blog post alone and even having a few 1:1 conversations from it?

Just yesterday, a Writer’s Room member shared that’s started happening to her and it’s the BEST feeling!

The point is, First name / friend, you don’t have to be a good writer to create good content consistently.

You simply have to make it a HABIT that’s:

✔️ Obvious
✔️ Attractive
✔️ Easy
✔️ AND Satisfying

Lucky for you, if writing is something you want to focus on in 2024 – whether it be for blogs, emails, or other long form content in your businessThe Writer’s Room is where you can build that habit and have each law of behavior change present.

The Slack community makes it pretty OBVIOUSwhen you join, you’ll find that the community is poppin’ and you’ll want to get in on it too!

The results that are possible and the freedom that you experience when you consistently implement long form content in your business make it ATTRACTIVEsure, engagement on social media is nice. But an inquiry from Google from a completely cold lead? Or a 3,836.2% increase in organic search traffic just from implementing blogs alone? (Yes, that’s a real stat from one of my clients 👀) I’ll take that over an Instagram like any day of the week.

Your portal and all of the resources it includes make it EASYif you need support with a specific area of writing, there’s a good chance there’s a resource already available for you! And if there’s not? You can ask all the Q’s in Slack! (Click here for the portal tour in case you missed  it.)
