Welcome to Notes From Natty - our standing Friday morning coffee date (inbox style of course) where you get a weekly digest of stories, writing tips and a round up of the latest at Natty Writes. Grab your cup (I’ve got mine ☕️) & let’s dig in ⬇️
For most of my life, I’ve told myself that I’m not athletic which means that I also have never been someone who consistently works out or goes to the gym.
I didn’t play sports growing up (well… I tried most of them and it was an epic fail 🤣) and I am 100% a “yay sports” girl through and through.
But as I got older and went to college and moved into adulthood, I found myself WANTING to be the person that had some sort of exercise routine.
After all, that’s the healthy thing to do, right? Both physically and mentally.
Because I had told myself all of these years that I just wasn’t athletic, I truly believed that I could NEVER become someone who worked out consistently.
Until I realized… it’s really not about my skill level at all. (Admittedly, the only machine I know how to use in a gym is the treadmill.)
It’s about choosing some type of exercise and making it a HABIT. Once it was a habit, the better I could get at it.
It wasn’t until 2022 that I FINALLY picked something and actually stuck with it.
Now, my exercise of choice is walking (😂) so don’t come for me – and don’t underestimate the benefits of daily walks, ok?!
2 years later, it’s something I STILL do almost every single day. And here’s why: it included the 4 Laws of Behavior Change that James Clear says must be present in order to implement a new habit in your life:
- Make it obvious
- Make it attractive
- Make it easy
- Make it satisfying
I made it obvious by setting out my walking clothes the night before.
It was attractive because I chose an outdoor walking area and there’s nothing like the beginning of Spring in Georgia to make you want to get outside.
It was easy because it was ONLY one mile a day.
And it was satisfying because I was doing it as a part of a Mile a Day March challenge and I checked off a box every day.
So why am I telling you this? Because I believe the same is true for creating content in your business.
It’s more of a HABIT than it is a SKILL!
The more that you do it, the more that you’ll get better at it, but you can’t get better at it until you start doing it.
A lot of times people tell me that they haven’t started blogging in their business consistently because they “don’t know what to write about” or they “aren’t a good writer.”
But I’m here to say that’s really not it at all. It’s more of a mental game than anything.
Every action we take on a daily basis stems from some sort of habit we’ve created – whether we realize it or not.
For now, I want to zoom into Law #2 from above – making it attractive – to help you see how this works.
