A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator:

Hi, First name / friend! Despite a lingering cough, I'm feeling much better now after my recent bout with COVID. This coming week, I'm going to soak up as much time as possible with my son, Mason, since he leaves for his second semester of college next weekend. Our little family is planning to spend the day together on Monday to do some shopping for him. I'm looking forward to it!

One of my goals for 2024 is to create more content for proofreaders and editors, and I started this week by writing two articles for you. The first one is about how to manage client work when we're feeling sick. Here's a link: Proofreading Through Sickness: Managing Client Work When Feeling Under the Weather.

I'm excited about writing a series of articles in 2024 called Life Lessons from My Houseplants. The first article in the series is Thriving in the Right-sized Pot: Life Lessons from My Houseplants. I hope you enjoy these tips about setting the right-sized goals for your life and business.

A vial is a small container, typically for holding liquids like medicines, while vile is an adjective used to describe something morally wrong or extremely unpleasant.💡

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? Mainly short, non-fiction content. Most of my work is copyediting and/or proofreading technical and marketing blog posts and direct mail. I also occasionally do line editing for non-fiction books. I really like the variety!
  • Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I took a number of editing classes in my undergrad and completed Proofread Anywhere in 2022, but I'm mainly self-taught.
  • What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? I love getting to know writers and their voices. It feels so satisfying (and efficient!) to learn and anticipate their common mistakes and better understand what they're trying to say when their writing is unclear.
  • What causes you the most frustration in your business? I struggle with quoting prices for projects, especially when I'm quoting per word. I always do a complimentary sample of the project before providing a quote, for both my comfort level and the client's, but it's still hard to know in advance how much time I'll end up spending on a piece.

Would you like your proofreading or editing business to be featured in a future issue of The Leaflet?

PLANT OF THE WEEK:

Aloe

My son bought me this little plant and pot last year. We affectionately call him Spike.

He's doubled in size, and I really should repot him soon.

He makes me smile.

Let's keep growing together!
