The No-BS Marketing Mail - Issue #1
Reading time: 3.5 minutes
👋 Welcome to the first ever issue of The No-BS Marketing Mail! My goal here will be to provide you with weekly information on dominating social media in a data-driven way.

Each week I will be:
  • Auditing subscriber IG profiles
  • Breaking down viral social media posts
  • Giving you practical tool recommendations
I am beyond excited for what's to come! Let's get started…

🧪 1. Viral Post Breakdown
Every week, I pick a viral social media post and do a detailed breakdown on why it succeeded and what you can learn from it. This week, I picked this business related post by Foundr:
📊 1.1 Data:
Views: 2.7M (100x their Average Views)
Likes: 89K (296x their Average Likes)

📝 1.2 Post Summary:
Super quick (13 seconds) fast-paced looping Reel on a common pain point in the eCommerce world, which begins with a controversial statement.

🤔 1.3 Why did it succeed?
  • The production quality is superb (great camera movement, Whiteboard Drawings and Voiceover)
  • Fast-paced with no dull moments (after the hook, they immediately dive into the value)
  • Giving a practical example (showcasing how this info can be applied in real life)
  • A sprinkle of controversy (choosing Elon Musk for the example + having a bold statement in the beginning generated a lot of comments)

✅ 1.4 What can you learn?
  • Start your next Reel with some sort of rapid movement (use an “appear on Camera” transition, use a Camera tilt, or simply do a bold hand movement)
  • Try giving examples when talking about complex theoretical topics
  • Use visual props - notebooks, diagrams, whiteboards or simply a Green Screen effect with images in your background
  • Keep it short and sweet with 1 idea per video - this Reel was 13 seconds, and it explained a complex topic + gave a practical example

🧰 2. Marketing Tool Showcase
This week, I want to share with you Imagine by Meta.

Whatever you think about Meta and Mark Zuckerberg, you can't deny his positive impact on technology

A little over a month ago, he made another contribution releasing Meta's version of a text to image generator

It's completely free and trained on more than 1.1 billion Facebook/Instagram data points
Image item
This is a great alternative to a ton of paid tools with the same functionality but a much more limited pool of training data

And in machine learning, the more quality data there is, the better!

🔬 How to use it:
  • Create visual content for your next post
  • Create interesting photos for your ads
  • Make realistic photos for presentations
  • Test out new ideas before committing to buying assets
  • Make your wildest dreams a reality and have fun!

🔢 Overall Score:

9/10 - The tool is free, does a great job at what it says it does and can help content creators and performance marketers level up their digital presence. Aside from not being available in all countries at the moment, it is a win!

🔎 3. Profile Audit
Every week, I pick an Instagram profile from an email subscriber to be thoroughly audited and transformed. Even if your profile hasn't been picked this week, go through the audit, as you may learn something you can apply.
PROFILE AUDIT #1
@Junboytennis
A profile created in 2017 with over 500+ posts on the topic of tennis. Recently restarted after a break but stuck at 5000 followers
👉 3.1 The Good Parts
Let's begin the profile audit with what Jun is doing correctly:
  • Professional profile picture with a prop showcasing his niche
  • Keywords in his handle make him searchable for “tennis”
  • Great pinned posts establishing him as a husband/professional

👉 3.2 The Bad Parts:
Moving on to the parts that can use some improvement:
  • Lack of keywords in his headline
  • The visual identity isn’t consistent
  • Only has 1 highlight which isn’t updated
  • Bio can benefit from more details + CTA (Call-to-action)
  • His content strategy doesn't reflect what works on Instagram
  • Could use 1 pinned post which reflects the content he posts now

👉 3.3 The Solutions:
Here are the changes I propose:

1️⃣ Creating a new visual identity that reflects the Tennis niche and his professional experience inside it

Image item
2️⃣ Reworking his headline and bio (as they work together) inspired by the information on his website
Image item
3️⃣ Adding Highlights with additional information to increase the time people spend on his profile which leads to more people converting into followers
Image item
4️⃣ Created a new content strategy that is easy to execute, has diversified content formats and is optimised for the Instagram platform
4.1 Posting Reels 50% of the time in the following formats:

  • Talking Head Reel or B-Roll with Read Caption
Example: Stop making these 3 tennis mistakes
  • Voiceover + Green Screen:
Example: 5 things to buy before playing tennis
  • Case-studies:
Example: How to serve like a PRO - breaking down frame-by-frame how PRO players play

4.2 Posting Carousels 30% of the time in the following formats:
  • Storytelling:
Example: How Rafael Nadal became a tennis god
  • Listicles:
Example: 5 YouTube videos to watch if you want to get better at Tennis
  • Repurpose Reels into Carousels after 2-3 months

4.3 Posting Single Images 20% of the time in the following formats:
  • Personal Photos + Storytelling captions related to Tennis, examples:
    - What I learned from being coached by Robert Davis
    - How I became a top 5 tennis player in Singapore
    - How Josh (student) went from beginner to PRO in 18 months
