Welcome to 2024!!! As we complete this first month of the year, we want to express excitement for the projects to come. From young scientists to the leaders of tomorrow, we know 2024 will be another year for the books!!!

YOUNG ADVERTISING PROFESSIONALS AT WORK

CASW had the honor of witnessing the creativity and dedication of sophomores at Manhattan Early College School for Advertising. Participants were tasked with creating an ad campaign for North Face and putting together their very own presentations complete with original graphic designs. This is not only a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their talents, but it also provides early exposure to what it is really like to work on an ad campaign. 

 

We are so proud of these young, emerging professionals and cannot wait to see where their talents lead!!!

THE MAGIC OF HYDROPONICS

We are beyond impressed with our junior horticulturalists at PS 115!!! The gardening program at COMPASS-PS 115 has been one of our most exciting developments within the past year, and the winter months have done little to slow our participants down - as these young gardeners are learning the basics of hydroponics! 

 

Essentially, hydroponics refers to the practice of growing plants in nutrient-rich solution rather than soil - making it easier to grow plants indoors. This winter, participants have explored various methods and systems within this practice, and have already begun to see their efforts sprout!!!

LADDERS FOR LEADERS 2024

The 2024 Ladders for Leaders application has been open for over a month, and CASW is already off to a strong start!!! We had 200 slots to fill for this prestigious program, aimed toward youth ages 16-24. As of January 21st, we have received 834 applications and are moving toward selecting 201 participants. In the next phase, these participants will register for career training, where they will practice skills such as crafting their resume, interviewing, and the finer points of professional etiquette.

CELEBRATING MLK DAY AT DYCKMAN

At CASW-Dyckman, our middle school girls came together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a remarkable fashion. As part of the site's MLK-Day Camp, the girls enjoyed a day packed full of activities tailored toward Dr. King's values and their own visions for the future. To finish this special day, participants completed an impactful empowerment poem in which they had the opportunity to talk about their dreams for themselves. 

We are so proud to see the legacy of equality and justice continue within the next generation!!!

WORD OF THE DAY WITH BRONX RIVER

Our Bronx River Cornerstone program is on a mission to foster a love of linguistics and literacy!!! At the beginning of January, they began a new initiative; Word of the Day! Using the colorful displays pictured above, participants are now introduced to a new word as part of their daily routines. This new display will hopefully encourage participants to enhance their vocabularies and seek further clarity through context clues.

In this new feature of CASW News, we'd like to share some fun content that's been on our minds lately! Whether it's a new song or YouTube video, our pop culture recommendations will reflect ideas and values that might be useful for our colleagues, participants, partners, or the community as a whole!
