Hi, First name / friend! This week, I enjoyed making new connections with proofreaders and editors on LinkedIn and other social media platforms. A warm welcome to our new Leaflet subscribers!

Isn't it fun to see progress in your life, your business, and your plants? This is my last Christmas cactus blossom of the season, photographed over three days. Can you believe how much it changed in that short time?

Word for 2024: Rooting
I decided to jump on the bandwagon of choosing a word for the year. No surprise, it's plant-related.

I chose the word rooting for two reasons:
  1. Because The Proofreader Greenhouse launched in May of 2023, it's still in the rooting stage. I'm hoping that 2024 is the year that it grows to help even more proofreaders and editors.
  2. An alternate meaning of rooting is cheering someone on, giving them support, or expressing enthusiasm for their success. I'm rooting for you, TPG community!
Did you pick a word for this year? I'd love to hear what it is! Please reply to this email and let me know.

See the network of roots on these philodendron vines I'm propagating in water? It always amazes me how roots form, and it's fun to watch them through the green glass.

Catch of the Week:

The new-to-me expression beyond the pale means outside the bounds of acceptable behavior or beyond what is considered conventional.💡

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? Fiction (mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and romance)
  • Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I took a few courses through various editing organizations, but I'm mostly self-taught.
  • What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? I love that I get to work from home and spend lots of time with my dog and my husband (who also works from home). I also love being able to choose what I work on and what I say no to.
  • What causes you the most frustration in your business? I love working for myself, but sometimes I do miss the days when I had a steady paycheck as an employee—and paid vacation.
  • What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors? Embrace efficiency tools like macros, text expanders, and keyboard shortcuts. They save time, brainpower, and hand movements!

Would you like your proofreading or editing business to be featured in a future issue of The Leaflet?

PLANT OF THE WEEK:

Scindapsus Treubii “Moonlight”

This plant sits in my kitchen windowsill, and it gets lots of indirect light.

The thick, heart-shaped leaves are silvery-green.

I've wrapped the tendrils around a moss pole for support.

Let's keep growing together!
