Florida looks to keep kids off social media. Can it work?
The Florida House this week approved legislation to prohibit anyone under 16 years old from having a social media account.
The House built upon previous related measures, such as requiring schools to provide lessons on safe social media use, better secure studentsâ digital data and restrict the use of certain applications on school-owned devices and platforms.
âThis is about protecting children from addictive technology and what we know harms them,â House Speaker Paul Renner said after HB 1 passed. The Senate has yet to take up the initiative, but President Kathleen Passidomo has
signaled support for it, News Service of Florida reports.
