This week is Kansas Wildfire Awareness Week! This campaign represents a partnership with the State Office of the Fire Marshal and the Kansas Department of Emergency Management to spread awareness on wildfire prevention. Featured Shrub: American Plum

Prunus americana, or American plum, often called wild plum, is native to most of Kansas. Found naturally in pastures, road sides, and woodland borders, it has also been planted extensively throughout Kansas. American plum reaches a height of 12 feet with good growing conditions, but on more restrictive sites it may only reach 6 feet.

We are excited to announce Bill Waln as our new State Fire Management Officer! Bill has been a wildland firefighter since 1987, working for the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Bill has been active on Incident Management Teams responding to wildfire incidents, and All-Hazard incidents, in many states, as well as internationally.
