MEET REPORT: CELEBRATING WORLD WETLANDS DAY (3 FEB)
A handful of weeders and rangers got together on Saturday 3 February 2024 to weed Langvlei, the wetland that is part of upper Castle Gorge.
It was really meaningful to be working in this area seeing as Friday 2 February was World Wetlands Day! The purpose of this day is to ‘reaffirm protection and love for wetlands which are water ecosystems containing plant life and other organisms that bring ecological health in abundance to not only water bodies but environments as a whole’ (WikiPedia).
What a better way to spend a Saturday as part of a global initiative in conserving our wetlands one pom-pom and one verbena at a time!
Come on out and join us for the next conservation meet to protect our biodiverse grasslands and wetlands! This coming weekend it will be pom-pom and lantana at Wilgepoort!
We had perfect weather last Sunday as we started up the escarpment, heading to our first chill stop at the Piranha pools.
After a quick refresh, having our toes enthusiastically nibbled by the ‘Piranhas’, we headed on to the main event; relaxing and chilling at the pools under the main waterfall.
There we enjoyed swimming, jumping and water-side napping. We also rigged a cool 20m abseil that ended in the main flow of the waterfall. The rope was deliberately made a little short so we could enjoy a little free fall into the pool at the end of the abseil.
Even though the start of the abb was quite intimidating we had lots of takers - with many coming back for seconds or thirds.
It was a beautiful day out!
Thanks to a great group of hikers who all made the day really fun.
