Jeans have become the #1 wardrobe staple for many of us, and they have come a long way in terms of comfort, fit and options.
There truly is the perfect pair of jeans out there for everyone, and it's just a matter of finding yours.
Of course I can't tell you here what that pair is, but I'm here to help and provide links to a pairs that have been successful for many of my clients. It comes down to trial and error, but once you get it…ahhh!!✅👌🏼
In my private Style System group, I'm able to give more specific recommendations based on your body shape, style, taste and budget. The Spring Style System launches very soon, and we'll be READY to shift gears out of winter and into spring…(even if the weather isn't).
I will say that as far as trends go, the good news is (almost) ANYTHING GOES.
I also firmly believe that the best jean for you – is the jean that looks best on you.
How's that for vague?
But, seriously, if the on-trend style doesn't work with your body, it's best to look elsewhere. Here are some helpful tips:
- When in doubt, start with a slim-fit straight leg jean. If skinny jeans were your go-to for many years and look best on you, a slim-fit straight leg jean is a great way to update your skinnies and jeggings (those REALLY tight jeans are less on-trend and will look dated). A slim-fit straight leg jean will give you a similar silhouette in a more up-to-date style. See the catalog for shopping suggestions.
- When in doubt, go with a medium wash jean. Dark is great too if you want a “dressier” pair.
- Make sure you have dark/medium wash jean that is JUST RIGHT on you before venturing out to lighter washes or any distressing (distressing can be fun and cool..but keep it to a minimum).
- My personal favorite length, and the most versatile for shoe-pairing, is an ankle length jean - hitting just about an inch or so above the ankle bone. Showing your ankle is slimming to the leg. I'm NOT talking about capri length or some crops that hit closer to mid-calf which is NOT the most flattering choice. And again, ankle length jeans also give you the most option for shoes…flats, loafers, booties, sandals, heels…all work.
- Use a measuring tape to determine the rise and inseam of your favorite pants or jeans, and use that as a guide when shopping. Tip: a great option to get the length you want is to cut your jeans and create a very on-trend rough hem. Here's a great how-to article.
- If you prefer a full-length, straight leg jean, I recommend making sure the leg is slim enough (but not a jegging or too skinny) so you have the option of cuffing them to this ankle length. If the leg is very relaxed and wide at the ankle, it won't be able to be cuffed.
- Many pear shapes have great luck with girlfriend style jeans and flares and wide-leg jeans as they are more relaxed in the hips and thighs - but make sure they aren't baggy.
- Another style that does a great job of balancing hips or a larger upper body, is the kick crop or cropped flares like these. They also do a good job of adding some curve to very straight figures like rectangles.
- If you're at a complete loss, I always recommend starting at Nordstrom and getting help from one of their jean experts (same goes with bras). Even if you don't buy a premium pair there, you can get an idea of what works best on you.
And here are some straight leg jeans to consider. Wit and Wisdom and Democracy Jeans (same company) have worked well for many of my clients…Tip: Don't size up on these! (click image to shop)
