Did you grow up being told you “shouldn't wear horizontal stripes because they make you look bigger or wider?"
Let's clarify or correct that false statement.
First, it's true that high contrast, WIDE stripes can make an area look wider or bigger.
But, it's also true that THIN stripes trick the eye, keeping it moving and do NOT make the area look larger.
And if you're still convinced that any horizontal striped shirt will make you look wider, adding a layer over the shirt - like a cardigan, jacket or even a vest, breaks up the stripes and creates flattering, contrasting vertical lines down your front.
Another trick is finding a v-neck striped shirt
(like this sweater), or “cheating the V” by wearing a medium to long necklace with a striped top.
For the purposes of our BASICS, I recommend black and white stripes (or navy and white if you prefer). This is a classic, timeless yet also very modern piece that provides endless styling options and versatility.
If you're a stripe collector I recommend going through your collection and weeding out any tops you don't wear, that don't fit or have seen better days.
