I'm taking a break from puppy training to write this newsletter, First name / friend. Whew! It's been a busy week at my house, for sure.
I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the folks who subscribed to The Leaflet this past week. Welcome, friends!
👇 Are you a TPG member yet? 👇
Those of you who receive The Leaflet each week may be unaware of all the benefits of being a member of The Proofreader Greenhouse. Whether you're just beginning your proofreading or editing journey or you're a veteran in this field, you'll enjoy all the resources and especially the wonderful community.
Did I mention that TPG membership is free? What do you have to lose?
Formerly and formally sound quite similar, so I often see this error in the court transcripts I proofread. I always check the text around it and use formerly when the context refers to something that occurred in the past.💡
This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor:
J.C. Editing Ink, LLC
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
What type of content do you proofread or edit? I'm a fiction editor specializing in young adult, new adult, fantasy, romance, and sci-fi, along with the many sub-genres that fall within those categories. I also edit academic work, primarily focusing on psychology and the humanities.
Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? Aside from my bachelor's degree in English and Print and Digital Publishing, I've taken numerous courses to develop my skills as an editor. I also have plans to continue taking professional development courses through the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), the two editorial associations I am a member of.
What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? My favorite thing about being an editor is supporting authors and helping bring the best version of their story to light. I believe in developing trust with my clients so we can ensure they fully realize their creative vision. Stories are the magic the world needs. It's the magic I've always needed in my life. I want to be the bridge that helps authors get their stories to the readers who need them most.
What causes you the most frustration in your business? So far, I haven't been the biggest fan of the marketing side of my business. I'd rather just be editing, you know? But I've been challenging myself to find joy in marketing so I can ensure I connect with the clients who need me most. It just takes a little creativity!
What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors? If you're using a bunch of different systems to manage contracts, invoice clients, take payments, track your expenses, communicate with clients, book meetings, etc., I'd recommend checking out Moxie. It's a client- and project-management system that's saved my life. I couldn't keep track of all those different things unless it was all in one place, and Moxie does this better than anyone else. Trust me, I looked.
