Introducing My Cancer Family: Friends Connect

We are so proud to bring to all teens and young adults across the US, a virtual teens connect group that is the brainchild of two teens who went through a cancer journey with their parents.

In collaboration between My Cancer Family and CSCNYCT, we will be offering a virtual group for teens ages 14-18 who have a parent or primary caregiver diagnosed with cancer.  This networking group will meet twice monthly on Thursdays at 6:30pm, and will be facilitated by Olivia Edelman, Teen Life Coach.

If you are interested in joining this group, please contact:
Jennifer Ricca, CTF Manager at jricca@cscnyct.org or 914-644-8844 ext. 104
(All participants will be required to complete a brief intake form before starting.)

Matthew Fussteig:
“It's so important to find support when a parent is going through cancer. A family's whole life is turned upside down, and there's so much that is scary and unknown. When my mom was being treated for breast cancer, I didn't know anyone else in a similar situation. At school, I was the kid whose mom had cancer, and that was kind of stigmatizing and isolating. I wish that I had had a community of peers who could relate to what I was experiencing. I am so happy that I can offer this type of comfort, and share my own been-there-done-that wisdom with others. I look forward to connecting with other teens out there who are feeling alone and being a trusted peer who can really listen and understand.”

Jaylan Fisch:
“I wanted to start this group because as a kid who’s had both parents have cancer - it is a lot and I don’t know anyone like me.  I was young when my mom went through cancer.  I remember being scared and didn’t want to talk about it.  I had this idea when my dad was diagnosed almost two years ago.  It’s been harder to talk about because his treatment has been so hard.  I heard someone named Matthew wanted to start this group and it reminded me why I wanted to also. This group is a way of kids like me all meeting and connecting. It doesn't have to be related to talking about cancer but I think it’s important because a lot of kids may think they are alone but they aren't. I promise there are other kids who have gone through similar things to you and hopefully we can help each other.”

Olivia Edelman:
"Hi, my name is Olivia Edelman. I am a former teacher, a Teen Life Coach, and Teen Guru, dedicated to mentoring/helping teens through all obstacles and challenges that life brings. I lost both my parents from cancer so I know firsthand how difficult it is. I only wish I had a community like this group to join for support, and guidance, and to be surrounded by other teens who went through similar situations and "understand how I am feeling." This group will be a safe space for teens to come together to feel like they are not alone, to have hope, and to see firsthand that they will be okay. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and building a community."
