Lately, I've been realizing I don't know a lot, especially in the sphere of business, and I'm also realizing I don't know the questions I should be asking. As adults, I feel like we don't really ask questions unless we really don't know something, but perhaps it shouldn't be that way. A child will ask questions about everything, including the things they do know.
Just this Tuesday, a backhoe dug a hole on our street to fix some cables. That very same day, the hole was filled with asphalt and the steam roller came by to cure it. Abel watched the entire thing happen. But ever since Tuesday, Abel has been asking me every day, “Why did they dig a hole? Why did they fill the hole with asphalt?" He knows why. We asked the construction men why and they told us. I've answered the question when he asked it. And today, I replied, “Why do you think?” And he told me exactly why. So WHY IS HE STILL ASKING THESE QUESTIONS!?
Psychologists may say that kids asks questions they know the answer to because it makes them feel safe, almost like a liturgy or ritual, which I believe is part of the reason. However, as I've been struggling with asking the right questions to take the next steps in my business, I'm admiring and learning from this inquisitiveness. It's okay to ask questions that you may know the answer to. Questions can more lead to more questions that you never knew you needed to ask, and it can be the key to unlocking the next step.
