Hey friends! I hope you had a great weekend.

I volunteered at a community garden, cleaned up my backyard garden, organized my seed collection** 🤓, and spent hours wandering around one of my favorite garden nurseries. Spring is on my brain!!!

** For anyone looking to get organized with their seed packets, I suggest grabbing a 3-ring binder and using 4x6 photo protector sleeves. So gratifying!

As much as I want to keep talking your ear off about gardening, I'm here to give you SIX technical nuggets that I shared in my Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile workshop last week. Here goes:

1) Get a scannable QR code for easy connecting.
Generate a QR code for your LinkedIn profile so people can scan it with their phone and connect with you. This way you bypass those awkward moments of trying to find each other on the platform. To do it:

On LinkedIn mobile, when you're “Home," click the Search bar. You'll see an icon that looks like a QR code scanner. Click that and your LinkedIn QR code will come up. ave it to your photos for easy access.

2) Turn off “People Also Viewed” to stop handing recruiters the names of your potential competitors.
When you go to another person's LinkedIn profile, you'll see on the right side of the screen: 1) People You May Know  and 2) People Also Viewed.

Think of “People Also Viewed” as people who are doing similar work as the person's profile you're looking at. So if you're a recruiter, you just got handed names of other talent. We don't want this.

To turn off “People Also Viewed” - head to Settings and then Account Preferences:

3) If you're actively looking for a job and/or want to be findable by recruiters, upload your resume on the backend.
Help recruiters find you by uploading a copy of your latest resume under “Job Seeker Preferences" found in Data Privacy Settings.

4) Download a copy of your connections and be less distracted.
I immediately loved this tip when I first heard it a few weeks ago because it means getting a sortable spreadsheet of my connections - that I OWN. I like sorting it by connection date as way to remember my career.

By downloading a copy of your LinkedIn data every so often, you have a back-up list of all the people you know. You also can engage with this list OFF the platform, meaning you're likely less prone to distractions as you sort through to make use of the list.

5) Stay active and/or change up your profile so LinkedIn knows you're alive.
LinkedIn has an algorithm, just like every social platform. It prioritizes active users. So if you're just using it to sleuth and nothing else, you're missing out!
Some ideas on how to stay active:
  • Update your profile. Change up your headshot, background cover photo, headline, a word or two in your ABOUT section.
  • Ask for recommendations from your connections.
  • Post something / contribute to groups.
  • Comment / ask questions on other posts.
  • Message contacts to check-in.

6) Change your profile URL so it doesn't have a gazillion numbers at the end.
Your resume is peanut butter. LinkedIn is jelly. They go together. For any resume I write, if the person uses LinkedIn 🤞, I always add their profile URL to the top of their resume as a “read more” option.

This means their URL needs to be clean. Like this: linkedin.com/in/lindseylathrop, instead of this: linkedin.com/in/lindseylathrop-1587573.
