What's New With Us

We have spent all of February still in the area around Ajo, Arizona, and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Located a couple of hours southwest of Phoenix, it is home to some of the lushest desert scenery in Arizona. We love the off-the-beaten-path feel and small-town atmosphere.

With plenty of rain this winter, the desert is greener than I have ever seen it. Much of our time is spent hiking, bird watching, photographing, or just chilling out enjoying the views from our boondocking campsites.

When not doing those things, I'm busy with my product reviews or RV maintenance tasks. As for maintenance I had a biggie this month. Over the past few years, my electric waste valves have slowly become clogged with debris and need to be removed for cleaning and lubing. It's not a fun job, but it's much needed when off-grid camping.

With a few days of lousy weather on the horizon anyway, we decided to check into an RV Park for a week so I could get'er done. Hickiwan Trails near the little hamlet of Why, AZ, was a good bet; it is a quiet park and only $150 a week for a full hookup site. It served the purpose nicely, and I got five big loads of badly needed laundry done.

Anne was busy with fun of her own this month, taking advantage of the clear, dark skies down here to do some star trail night photography. You can check out her behind-the-scenes how-to video on her photography blog.

With flushed tanks and clean waste valves, we are back in the desert off-grid again. Soon, we will embark on the meandering spring journey back northward. March and April are always fun months for us. As things warm up, we can enjoy places that are higher in elevation. Stay tuned…
