MArch 2024
Callery pear trees are already in bloom this spring so there is no better time to think about removing these trees from your property! Thanks to a wonderful sponsorship from Evergy, there will be four Callery pear buy-back events this spring in the KC Metro area and Topeka. This program is a collaborative effort between our agency, Deep Roots KC, Johnson County Parks and Recreation, and Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.

Forest Health Coordinator Ryan Rastok discusses tree species with participants at the 2023 Topeka Callery pear buy-back event.
The sign ups for the four buy-back events have been released and can be found on the Deep Roots website below. We recognize with this effort that the supply of replacement trees far exceeds the amount of Callery pears that should be removed. If you miss out on the event, we hope you will still consider removing any Callery pear trees from your property to help reduce the encroachment of this species into grasslands and other landscapes across our state.
There are also still lots of beautiful trees and shrubs available through our conservation tree spring sale. If you are seeking trees or shrubs for wildlife habitat, windbreaks, wood lots, timber plantations, or streambank plantings, check out our sale website!
Wildfire season has also begun in Kansas with several fires requesting assistance from the Kansas Forest Service. In addition to the Ready, Set, Go! handbook included in this month's newsletter, check out our social media and website for educational information about reducing wildfire in Kansas. Nearly all wildfire starts in our state are human caused. By paying attention to weather patterns, local communications, and reducing sparks in your every day activities, you can help to prevent the next devastating wildfire.
As always, I hope you enjoy this month's content, please reach out if you have any questions or suggestions for future newsletter content!

Enjoy,
