AGM NOTICE

Dear Valued Members of the Mountain Club,

We are excited to extend an invitation to you for our upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). This event in our annual calendar offers a unique opportunity for members to engage, for us to reflect on the year's achievements, and to share our goals for the future.

Our AGM will be held at the Clubhouse (11 Oorbietjie Rd, Robin Hills, Randburg, 2194) on Wednesday, 13 March 6pm for 6:45pm. Snacks and refreshments will be served.

We aim to make our AGM informative with a review of our milestones from the past year and outlining our vision for the year ahead. Each portfolio will present an update, sharing successes, challenges, and future plans. Your participation is not just valuable; it's essential to keep our club thriving and our love for mountaineering alive.

For those unable to attend in-person, virtual options will be available. RSVP on the WhatsApp group to receive the agenda and other important details before the time.

We look forward to welcoming you to the AGM and celebrating our achievements and aspirations.

JOIN THE ADVENTURE:
INTRODUCING THE MCSA EXPEDITION INITIATIVE

Calling all adventurers of the Mountain Club! We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our Expedition Initiative for 2024, a fresh and ambitious effort to reignite the spirit of exploration and adventure across our mountains and beyond. In essence, this initiative strives to provide support to MCSA members looking to take part in or lead expeditions in South Africa and abroad.

This initiative is more than a portfolio; it's a movement. A journey to push boundaries, explore uncharted territories, and embrace the full spectrum of mountaineering, from the heights of advanced expeditions to nurturing the next generation of climbers through training and mentorship.

This is your invitation to be part of something grand. Together, we'll shape the future, rich with adventure, learning, and exciting expeditions that honor our club's legacy and pave new paths for generations to come.

Interested? Join the WhatsApp group for more details including our mission and how to propose projects.

MEET REPORT:
18 Feb DOME ESCARPMENT
The meet was very well attended (I would say the most I have ever experienced on a trad meet).

A number of routes were climbed, ranging from Twilight Arete (10) to Fallen Angel (21).

One of our members (a bullet of note) unfortunately took a tumble off Chatter Face and cut himself rather badly, which required  a trip to the ER room to get stitched up. Served as a  reminder to always have a decent first aid kit on hand - something which I have tended to omit in recent years.
Apart from that mishap everything went off smoothly and I believe everyone really enjoyed the outing.

MEET REPORT: 2-3 MAR BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF CLIFF CLEARING

There were only 4 of us and we got the workout of the year, one of us even had to make a new hole in their belt!

Enjoyable productive exercise in the outdoors - no plastic gym for me! We wondered about the training that the Roman legionnaires used to do 20 miles in 5 hours with kit on, 18 miles fast march and then build a camp!

This meagre weeding team broke camp at sunrise, marched to the cliff-face and descended into the prickly pear thorns and lantana hooks. Alternating our weaponry of pick, saw and cutters we opened up the beautiful quartz rocks and green haemanthus seeds to the sun. Prickly pear tossed to the bottom was pulverised by well-chosen stone tools, held in place by a lance.

Standing over the Boekenhoutskloof cliffs setting up a stance to abseil off, I watched mountain reedbuck, a family of warthog and the usual baboon troop pass on the opposite side. Rewards and thanks for our legionnaire training day as we plodded out at sunset.
