Rising from the Ashes: 
Transformative Leadership in the Aftermath
First name / Hey, Friend! 
As I sit down to write this month's blog, the theme emerges effortlessly. It's a topic I've touched on sparingly before, but it feels apt to delve into now. 
 
March 24th will mark the five-year anniversary of a pivotal moment in my life—the day our house was engulfed in flames. 
 
While I've shared snippets of this experience before, today I approach it from a different angle: that of a leader. 
 
At the time of the fire, I was balancing roles as the acting CEO and COO of an anti-trafficking organization deeply rooted in trauma understanding. Despite this, I began to question our ability to apply that knowledge practically, feeling a dissonance between theory and reality.
 
Today, I extend this message to all who are navigating challenges within their professional spheres. Adversity offers an opportunity to foster inclusive, supportive workplace cultures capable of enduring hardships collectively. Here's to embracing the hard moments together and forging a path towards a more compassionate and resilient future.

 Embracing Resilience and Leading with Purpose 
 
In the aftermath, amidst gestures of kindness and empathy, I found myself grappling with the relentless forward march of responsibilities. Payroll deadlines, critical decisions—life went on, demanding attention despite personal turmoil. It became evident that while kindness abounded, the application of trauma-informed principles had its limitations, particularly concerning timelines for healing.
 
During this tumultuous period, I resolved to channel my experiences into meaningful action, paving the way for a transformative journey toward fostering genuine change within organizational cultures.
To get started, think about this: 
 5 Leadership Responses in Crisis
 
1. Reassign Tasks: When a team member is in crisis, swiftly reevaluate workload distribution. Prioritize essential tasks and delegate responsibilities to alleviate pressure.
 
2. Core Objective Focus: During crises, prioritize mission-critical tasks that directly contribute to your organization's core objectives. Pause non-essential projects or initiatives that have not yet commenced or are peripheral to your primary mission. 
 
3. Strategic Alignment: Ensure that decisions are guided by individuals who clearly understand the organization's values and goals, emphasizing the importance of strategic alignment during challenging times.
 
4. Hold Accountable with Empathy: Maintain accountability while recognizing and empathizing with the individual's circumstances. Offer support and understanding, but ensure deadlines and expectations are clear.
 
5. Recognize Trauma Responses:  Learn to differentiate between behavioral reactions stemming from the crisis and inherent traits of the individual. Respond with compassion and understanding, avoiding judgments or shaming, which can exacerbate trauma.
