Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35

Today’s verse isn’t from the historical narrative of what Jesus did during Holy Week. It seems that Jesus was anointed that evening by Mary of Bethany. We know this is the day that Judas committed to betray Jesus, but during the daylight hours - theologians mostly agree that Jesus and the disciples were resting.

During the most significant and impactful days of His earthly life, with hours to spare, so much more teaching to do, so many more people to heal, Jesus rested.

This would be remarkable, except - it’s right in line with how He lived His life. When writing Tired of Being Tired, I found that it’s estimated that there are forty-one counts of Jesus walking away from the people He loved, for one reason or another, in the Gospels. Forty-one times that He withdrew, got alone, said no, or just did not stay—even when the entire purpose of His coming to earth was to seek and save these people.

Rest isn’t lazy or a sign that we’re weak. Rest isn’t a consolation prize for those who can’t tough it out. Rest is where we’re from, and it’s also where we’re going. Rest is not a result of the fall. Rest has always been a part of God’s kingdom, and it is a gift God gives. Jesus, during this very important week, proves this theological theory.

If Jesus rested on the most important week of His life, we can too.

We can stop making excuses for our pace, we can stop playing devil’s advocate about why rest won’t work for us.

If you have no idea where to start, I created a sabbath guide to help you craft a day off that is life-giving for YOU, that will leave you refreshed and ready for the work God has for you.

You can get the sabbath guide for free when you preorder one copy of Tired of Being Tired.

Jesus modeled holy rest for us, let’s follow Him.
