A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend, First name / friend. I'm not Irish, but I love seeing all the green around this time of year. If you haven't noticed, green is one of my favorite colors. 😉
To get us in the mood for the holiday, I'm sharing a photo my son captured when he was in sixth grade. He entered it in a state-wide competition and won first place! It's rare to see a four-leaf clover, much less one with such a beautiful water droplet. It's one of my favorite shots. I hope you like it, too. |

In last week's Leaflet, I mentioned that I was planning to write a post about two types of communication we can use to connect with clients and colleagues: verbal and written. I received thoughtful responses from some of you. Thank you! Here's a link to the blog post. I'd love to hear whether you prefer verbal or written communication (or a combination of both). Please reply to this email to let me know or log in to your TPG account and add a comment on the post. |

Online Tools I Spotted This Week: |
|
I love discovering online tools that help me do my work more efficiently. I spotted two tools this week and wanted to share them with you: |
|
The word barrow comes from an Old English word meaning to carry. Etymonline.com says the original (hand-barrow) had no wheel and required two persons to carry it. 💡 |

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor: |
|
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked: - What type of content do you proofread or edit? I've done it all at this point, but I now focus on copyediting and proofreading romance and mystery/thriller/suspense.
- Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I've participated in numerous editing classes, webinars, and professional trainings over my career—too many to list at this point!
- What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? I love the control and flexibility of my schedule. I get to choose who I work with, when I work, and how long I work. I'm able to attend my kids' events, take a nap, go for a walk, or do pretty much anything I want without having to report to a boss.
- What causes you the most frustration in your business? For my editing business, the toughest thing is finding chunks of time to work. I have to get fully immersed in the book I'm editing, and that can be difficult when I have a lot of meetings or coaching sessions to work around. For the coaching side of my business, it can be frustrating to work with someone who thinks they know everything. None of us knows everything, and we all need help at some point. The coaching client usually gets there in the end, though. 😄
- What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
Don't do it alone! I made the mistake of thinking "freelancer" meant "doing everything by myself," and I couldn't have been more wrong. Each of us needs a community, whether it's one or two close colleagues or a larger group. Knowing someone has your back is a nonnegotiable when you run an editing business.

Would you like your proofreading or editing business to be featured in a future issue of The Leaflet? |

Plant of the Week: Forsythia |
|
I usually share a photo of a houseplant at the end of each newsletter, but this week's plant lives in my front yard. Forsythia is one of the first plants to flower each spring here in North Carolina, and this huge bush (6 feet tall, 12 feet wide) is a showstopper. I captured some progress photos so you can see how the flowers bloom over time. Gorgeous! |

Let's keep growing together! |
