Spring has sprung, and no one is more excited than us at CASW. The arrival of the warmer months signals the approach of a busy season; both SYEP and Summer Rising 2024 are well on their way, as applications for both programs have already closed.
However, even as we prep for summer, the spring brings many exciting developments and opportunities across the agency, and we are more than happy to share some of these latest developments:
ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE SCIENTISTS…
At CASW, we believe in making a STEM education accessible and, dare we say, enjoyable. We are strong believers that everyone is born with natural curiosity, the key is to harness it as quickly as we can!
At PS/MS 37, participants have been looking like real scientists; from learning about surface tension through making their own bubbles, to creating their own marble-ramps with the help of a NASA scientist!
Soon, students will be able to show off their newest projects as part of a science fair next month!!!
FIRST WORKFORCE, NEXT, THE WORLD…
If you've been keeping up on our social media channels, it should be no secret that CASW-Workforce is gearing up for its busiest season yet. Applications for both LFL and SYEP are all in, and the SYEP lottery is well underway!!!
We are proud to be a first job for countless young people around NYC, and we recently had the opportunity to share some of the incredible participants we've worked with. News 12-The Bronx paid a visit to our Boone Ave office, and had the chance to speak with a few SYEP veterans about their own perspectives.
It's gearing up to be yet another exciting summer, who knows what stories we'll be able to tell?
We brought some artistic flair to Bronx River Houses!!! Our Bronx River Cornerstone program is hosting a Community Photo Day, in which residents had the opportunity to express themselves through photography!
This event kicks off the "From Roots to Arts" Artist in Residence Program, a 2-year initiative which brings together local artists and NYCHA residents to encourage unity and storytelling through the use of art in public housing! Aside from beautifying the neighborhood, this initiative will also be sure to bring people of different backgrounds and ages together!!!
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT WITH THE DOMINICAN BAR ASSOCIATION
CASW teamed up with the Dominican Bar Association to give an amazing presentation at Centro Civic Cultural Dominicano! Samuel Rivera, Kenia Lino, and Daniera Marte, and Leah Pappas from PS 18 and PS 115 respectively, teamed up with our Deputy Director Atenedoro Gonzalez and Angeramis Tejeda, Esq.!
The topic of this presentation? Our team focused on civic engagement - specifically the importance of connecting with one's community and getting out to vote with The People's Money - a new campaign that allows NYC residents to have a direct say over how funds are allocated within their communities.
Just another day of serving our community - one of the things we love most at CASW!!!
THIS MONTH's news - pop culture
In this feature of CASW News, we'd like to share some fun content that's been on our minds lately! Whether it's a new song or YouTube video, our pop culture recommendations will reflect ideas and values that might be useful for our colleagues, participants, partners, or the community as a whole!
If you have any recommendations for us, please feel free to email them to rrss@caswkids.org
