“There are few things more powerful than people united. What they unite over is not what matters...The most important aspect is remembering our existing connection, and, through that, allowing ourselves to feel at peace.”

What I'm reading

I appreciate that Dr. Megan Neff planned her book release just in time for spring break!

Dr. Neff has created a VERY readable guide to taking care of your entire Neurodivergent self!

She explores self-care  and regulation in ways that are practical and actionable.  Each chapter includes 1-2 pages of suggestions for each type of your self-care.

Chapter 5 addresses social self-care including lots of ways to meet social needs within the context of your own comfort zone.  From friendships to dating apps, to intimacy, to conflict.  There is something in here for everyone.
I especially enjoyed her expansion of of the concept of love languages for Autistic people to include, “info swapping, parallel play, sensory comfort, respect for boundaries, written expressions, and predictability and routine.”  Yes.  All of those, please.

Chapter 6 includes ways to take care of your professional self and prevent burnout.  There are so few resources that explore this part of Autistic burnout.  Two thumbs up to Dr. Neff for sharing ways to improve communication, succeed at interviewing, and my favorite….manage overstimulation at work.

Kory's take-away:
I am going to try out the sensory detox idea in Chapter 3 (page 55) when wrapping my work day before morphing into “mom mode."

If there are any other ideas you love in this book, let's talk about it!
