Words of wisdom from fellow McNair graduate student Alexis Briggins to help you think about the breaks you give to yourself - during spring break and otherwise. This is Alexis' second year in the counseling psychology doctoral program at Indiana University.
Giving yourself a break.
Within the season of spring break, I encourage you to view this time not just as a pause in your academic pursuits, but as an invaluable opportunity to prioritize self-care, recharge your batteries, and cultivate balance in your life.

Reflecting on my journey, here are compelling reasons why embracing spring break is essential for your well-being and academic success.

Reflect and Refocus: The transition from undergraduate to the first year of a Ph.D. program introduces new challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities. Spring break offers a precious moment to reflect on your progress, reassess your goals, and refocus your energies for the journey ahead. Take this time to ponder your research interests, academic aspirations, and personal growth objectives.

Celebrate Milestones: As you navigate the demands of graduate school, it's crucial to celebrate the milestones and achievements along the way. Spring break provides an ideal opportunity to acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrate your resilience, dedication, and passion for knowledge as you continue to chart your academic course.

Reconnect with Yourself: The rigors of academic life can sometimes lead to a loss of connection with oneself. Spring break offers a chance to reconnect with your inner voice, values, and passions. Engage in activities that bring you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. Whether it's spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing creative endeavors, prioritize activities that nourish your soul.

Nurture Relationships: Graduate school can be an isolating experience, but it doesn't have to be. Use spring break as an opportunity to nurture relationships with peers, mentors, and loved ones. Reach out to fellow students for support and fellowship, seek guidance from faculty members, and cherish moments spent with friends and family. Remember, the journey is more meaningful when shared with others.

Cultivate Balance: Achieving balance in graduate school is an ongoing pursuit, but spring break provides a chance to recalibrate and cultivate a healthier baseline in your life. Take this time to establish boundaries between work and leisure, prioritize self-care practices, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Remember, academic success is not synonymous with overwork and burnout.

Return with Renewed Purpose: As you bid farewell to spring break and return to the rigors of academic life, carry with you a sense of renewed purpose, clarity, and resilience. Harness the energy and insights gained during your break to propel you forward in your academic endeavors. Embrace the challenges, seize the opportunities, and remain steadfast in your pursuit of knowledge.

I encourage you to embrace spring break as more than just a break from your studies—it's a sacred space for self-discovery, rejuvenation, and growth. May you find moments of serenity, inspiration, and joy amidst the hustle and bustle of graduate school. ♥️
