Springtime in the vineyards welcomes an exciting transition as the dormant vines awaken for a new vintage. In the early months of spring, while the vines still slumber without leaves, their canes, having tirelessly supported the fruits of the 2023 vintage, undergo a meticulous trimming process similar to a well-deserved haircut— a tradition we fondly call pruning.
This precise task, influenced by various factors such as trellis style, location, desired crop yield, and vine age, involves carefully selecting and trimming last year's canes down to two-bud "spurs." In some cases, strategic extensions or canes are left tied to wires, a technique known as "cane" pruning.
With the warming days, the eagerly awaited bud break begins, unveiling the tender emergence of the first delicate leaves. These developing leaves will soon mature into the sturdy canes that carry the promise of the 2024 vintage.
