April 2024 | Issue No. 47

Hello & welcome to my April 2024 newsletter. Now that Spring has officially sprung & patio season is upon us, I thought it was the perfect time to share some of the wonderful wineries in & around Albuquerque. As in most creative professions, food & beverage businesses in New Mexico are a cut above the rest & the winemaking industry here certainly fits the description.  A wine lover myself, I appreciate the inspiration, dedication & hard work that goes into this labor of love.

The roots of winemaking in New Mexico date as far back as 1629, making it the nation's oldest region for the craft. The industry has seen a revival beginning in the 1970s & is now big business with new generations of winemakers flourishing & reinventing the ways that wine lovers access & enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Vineyards, wineries & tasting rooms add more than 7,000 jobs to our economy & a big financial impact to local communities.

Mission Winery husband & wife team, Seth & Jessica Beecher, celebrate their heritage as 11th generation New Mexicans through their beautiful wines. They infuse the spirit & love of the land into each bottle. Sustainable practices are the foundation of their business & they believe in minimal intervention, allowing the natural growing process to embody their fruit. They source grapes from their vineyards in Corrales & Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. You can find their tasting room conveniently located at 3421 Central Ave NE. Keep reading for an invitation to experience their wines through my April Special Offer….

Noisy Water Winery makes more than 60 wines & hard ciders from exclusively New Mexico fruit. Based in Ruidoso, they are a fifth generation winery with tasting rooms located around the state. You can experience their offerings in Albuquerque at the Old Town location in Plaza Don Luis. Their production facility in Alto, the Enchanted Vine Barn, doubles as a tasting room & event space. They host weekly & seasonal events, in addition to renting it out to the public for special occasions.

Founded in 2015, Sheehan Winery makes their wine from 100% New Mexico-grown grapes. With vineyards in Corrales, Bosque Farms & the South Valley, they take advantage of the rare combination of magic that the Albuquerque area offers in terms of climate & soil. They are passionate about offering a high quality, natural product created in  the “smallest winery in the world," located in the backyard of the proprietor. You can find their Albuquerque tasting room, opened in 2021, in Old Town. They also have a second location in Red River.

Established in 1995, Casa Rondena Winery is nestled in Albuquerque's North Valley surrounded by cottonwood trees. This setting offers guests the ability to experience the tasting room & wine shop while soaking in the beautiful & peaceful scenery. Casa Rondena often host events surrounding music, art & wine at the vineyard. Since 1990, they have dedicated love & energy into making New Mexico's best red wines, but their offerings run much wider than that. Since 2010 a converted family home on the property has housed the private 1629 Club.

Founded in 2016, VARA Winery creates award-winning wines made from Spanish grapes grown in Spain & America, with vineyards located here in New Mexico. Their wines are crafted in Albuquerque with the utmost care & dedication to the process. In addition to wine, they also offer craft spirits from their distillery- including brandy, gin, rum & vodka. The vodka & gin are distilled from the winery's grapes. VARA will be revealing their new micro-tasting room located at Balloon Fiesta Park mid-April. You can also find tasting rooms in Nob Hill & Santa Fe.

New Mexico Wine, established in 1991, promotes & supports New Mexico wineries & vineyards & their dedicated winemakers. They are an excellent source of news & education focused on the wine industry. They host annual festivals & events celebrating all things wine in the state. These festivals offer the Albuquerque community high quality entertainment, food, art & of course, WINE! Mark your calendars for May 25-27th for the 2024 New Mexico Wine Festival at Balloon Fiesta Park & August 31-September 2 for the 2024 Harvest Wine Festival. You can experience these festivals in both Albuquerque & Las Cruces. Check out their website for other upcoming events.
