Let's talk about making your own paint!

This is something I have just begun to experiment with. So, bear with me, as I'm no expert in this subject! Let's learn together. Does the thought of making your own paint seem like a daunting task? It wasn't until I started doing some research and found the Earth Pigments Company that I realized how easy it is.

PROS & CONS TO MAKING YOUR OWN PAINT
PROS
  • No additives & preservatives. You control what goes into your paint.
  • Better for the environment.
  • You can control the quantity & consistency of the paint.
  • You have the ability to make it an all-natural paint.
  • More cost-effective.

CONS
  • It can be more time consuming.
  • From what I'm reading, it only lasts about a week because there are no preservatives.
THE PROCESS
WHAT YOU NEED:
  • Powdered Pigment. These are archival and non-toxic.
  • Water
  • A binder such as this natural one or Liquitex matte medium (what I use).
  • A palette knife.
  • Face mask. Although pigments are non-toxic, you don't want to breathe in the powder.
  • A smooth surface to mix paint on.

Place a small amount of pigment onto your surface. Add approximately twice the amount in acrylic medium and a few drops of water. Using a palette knife, continuously work into a smooth mix. Some pigments may mix easier than others. (This was pulled right from the earth pigments website. I'll link it here)

I'm experimenting with different techniques to achieve a more fluid paint consistency (like acrylic ink) since I love pouring my paint. I'd also love to create large batches so I can work on a collection with the same color. However, from what I'm reading, the paint only lasts about a week before it starts to go bad. Stay tuned and I will write a blog post sharing my updates with you!

I'll see you next month for another art tip! If there is anything in particular you would like me to share, reply to this email and let me know!

Happy creating!
