NEW DESIGN FREQUENCIES

Our picks of the best installations in town

Artemest - L' Appartamento Installation

For the second edition of their Appartamento installation, Artemest hosted more than 200 guests in the dreamy surroundings of the Residenza Vignale, an early 20th- century Milanese mansion that had been redecorated by six interior designers using Artemest's repertoire of top- quality Italian wares.

The concept behind the event was to put artisans front and center, considering the love that people have about Italian craftmanship. Artemest itself features more than 1,500 artisans in thier online platform and out of those, over 170 were on display in Milan.
The different rooms were decorated by artisans from all over the world, from Kuwait- based studio Meshary AlNassar for the entryway to Italian Murano glass chandelier by Luca Polato sprouting yellow sunflowers.
Mexican- born designer Tamara Feldman accessorized the bedroom selecting a pair of chairs scrolling green marble seats, hewn from a single piece of stone which matched perfectly with Giopagani bed.

Hermès Collection Maison

For Milan Design Week 2024, the brand revealed a new collection in tandem with heritage pieces.
Following a route on the theme of the ground, the eye is drawn to a composition of raw materials – brick, stone, slate, wood, and compacted earth – depicting a jockey’s silk jersey. A powerful symbol of the house’s cultural heritage, the jockey silk with colorful geometric motifs is an inspiration for leather goods and textiles.

For the first time, saddlery and leatherworking know-how was used to create a line of objects: The Derby blanket baskets, buckets, and table centerpieces crafted entirely from leather.
Through the material, the brand explored construction, scale, color, and geometry. Strips of colored leather on both sides, pierced and stitched by hand, were coiled to form a basket, while table centerpieces in leather marquetry display graphic motifs. Meanwhile, the shape of the new Diapason d’Hermès lounge chair, which is made of leather and hammered Aluminium, was radical and elegant.

The Hermès Collection Maison 2024 also spotlighted new ethereal lamps inspired by the codes of equestrian vaulting and the delicate strokes of the Tressages Équestres dinner service, embodying lightness and refinement. The Voltige d’Hermès lamps revealed a slender stem in braided two‑tone leather, a shade in slab linen with leather piping, and a patinated base with a bronze-style finish. Understated and unique, it played with textures, materials, and colors.

Cassina x Bottega Veneta

This year, Bottega Veneta joined forces with Cassina and Fondation Le Corbusier to present a captivating large-scale installation titled ‘On the Rocks.’
A visit to the Palazzo San Fedele in Milan revealed the exhibit’s centerpiece: the LC14 Tabouret Cabanon, a timeless table design by Le Corbusier that showed the exceptional craftsmanship of the Cassina carpentry workshop.

While the LC14 Tabouret is celebrated in this ‘On the Rocks’ exhibition by Matthieu Blazy and Bottega Veneta during Milan Design Week, it was originally conceived by Le Corbusier for his personal cabin, or ‘cabanon,’ located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera. This minimalist retreat, measuring just 3.66 x 3.66 meters (12 x 12 feet), featured simple, box-shaped furniture. The versatile Tabouret itself drew inspiration from a wooden whiskey box Le Corbusier discovered washed ashore near his cabanon. The design is defined by its precise dovetail joints, expressing the connection between the solid wood surfaces. Meanwhile, oblong openings along each side enhance the piece’s portability and adaptability.

The exhibition space was designed around the theme of light, with a central cylindrical oculus resembling the sun, filtering light into the main room. The floor featured a dotted pattern reminiscent of a traditional motif found in AlUla's old city streets. LASVIT

A monumental outdoor fused glass installation was the first to greet visitors to Lasvit’s design, architecture, and glassmaking exhibition for Milan Design Week 2024. In the courtyard of Palazzo Isimbardi, the installation ‘Re/Creation’ stems from the properties of the glass, the main material used in the project. Lasvit showcased the results of extremely hot melted glass being allowed to relax and spread before it takes on the shape or form of the surface or object it is going to lie down on.

The outdoor installation was joined by its sibling, designed by Lasvit’s Art Director Maxim Velcovsky who aimed to spotlight the relationship between glass and architecture. Entitled Porta, the monumental piece underlined Lasvit’s artisanal glass facades, showing visitors the various facets of fused glass.

SAINT LAURENT

This year, Saint Laurent made its first foray into Milan Design Week with a stylish presentation of Gio Ponti plates, originally created by the legendary Italian designer as part of a residential commission in Venezuela. For the serene setting of a cloister at the Chiostri di San Simpliciano, creative director Anthony Vacarello commissioned a striking centerpiece of columns decorated with Ponti-inspired rhythmic patterns—and announced that the exhibition would be accompanied by a reissuing of the plates in partnership with Ginori 1735.

ALL THE GLOSS

Brands we love from Salone del Mobile 2024 Edition

The 2024 Salone del Mobile was back as the star of the design calendar: the leading international event for the design industry held from 16th to 21st April, at Milan’s Rho Fiera fairgrounds.
Set up in 1961, the trade fair boasts a wide range of furnishing products, distinguished by their expressive power and their functional, technological and material innovation, devised to enhance the domestic scene.

Each year, the trade fair gives shape to its mission as a laboratory of experimentation and cross-pollination, a place to meet, to interface and create new business opportunities.
Below are some of our favorites from the week.

The stand, imposing in size and framed in absolute, neutral darkness, featured full-length mirror surfaces that alternate with led walls visualizing natural, classic and contemporary imagery and contexts.
A central pathway allowed guests to view the collection. In more reserved interior areas, each detail could be touched by hand and explored close up.
Edra recounts how it gives shape to wellbeing in daily life through technological solutions, quality materials and manual skills, creating products that are capable of responding to the changes in our habitat while remaining completely current.
