May 2024 | Issue No. 48

Hello and welcome …

Thanks for joining me here again this month! In April I highlighted a few of our local  winemakers, so I thought a follow-up featuring our craft distilleries was in order for this month. Can you tell that I'm excited that it's finally patio season here in Albuquerque?

Many of our local distilleries approach their craft in the same way as our winemakers, as an art form that requires vision, dedication & imagination. You'll find that many offerings are inspired by New Mexico ingredients & flavor profiles that you won't find anywhere else in the country. This is yet another reason that our hometown small businesses & makers are the heart & soul of our community.

505 Spirit Orange Liqueur
505 Spirits celebrates the unique flavors of New Mexico through their liqueurs, vermouth, brandy & pre-mixed cocktails. Their goal is to create fun, memorable products that pair beautifully & effortlessly with other New Mexico distilleries' offerings. They partner with local small businesses to ensure quality & freshness in their ingredients, while also keeping the NM focus front & center. What they can't grow or produce themselves, they rely on & support NM farms & artisan makers, such as Eldora Chocolate.

Los Poblanos Botanical Spirits
Los Poblanos Botanical Spirits Gin
One of Albuquerque's most beloved places, Los Poblanos, is no stranger to the art of distillation. They work with a team of farmers, gardeners, herbalists, distillers & mixologists to create two variations of gin that complement their many other culinary offerings. They use alembic copper stills that utilize a steam distillation process. You can find their Town & Ranch shop alongside the tasting room & distillery housed in the 1940s Heaston's Town & Ranch Tractor Supplies building.

New Mexico Distillers Guild
Distilling equipment
Since 2014,  the nonprofit group The New Mexico Distillers Guild has been focused on raising awareness of & promoting the craft of artisanal distillation. They are passionate about distilleries that approach the process of craft distillation as an art form, rather than that of mass-produced liquor production.  Their leadership is elected & is comprised of local representation from some of the very best in the industry. You can find more information on events & opportunities to get involved on their website.
