The water crisis
Unfortunately, San Miguel de Allende, like many other growing cities in the region, grapples with a host of water-related challenges. These include concerns regarding the overexploitation of groundwater and poor water quality. Experts stress the global importance of sustainable practices spanning social, agricultural, and industrial domains. Given the escalating urgency, innovative solutions and collaborative endeavors are imperative in tackling water management concerns.

About the Project
Thankfully, local organizations like Salvemos al Rio Laja are working on solutions to this water crisis through sustainable efforts, collaboration, and community-empowerment.

Water Resilience and Environmental Sustainability: The project aims to improve the resilience of water resources and promote sustainable environmental practices by introducing eco-friendly technologies. These technologies include installing 300 eco-friendly systems, such as rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse, and training 500 individuals in nature-based solutions. Additionally, it involves creating 50 rain gardens and native plant habitats, working on soil and water conservation and reforestation efforts covering 2,500 hectares.
Collaboration and Integration: The project emphasizes collaboration with public and private institutions to facilitate volunteer efforts and secure funding for conservation activities. It seeks to build strong partnerships with landowners, local communities, and institutions to gain support for conservation initiatives on both private and public lands. Through inclusive approaches, the project organizes training sessions and nature walks to involve locals, schools, and institutions in implementing nature-based solutions.
Continuity and Empowerment: To ensure continuity and community empowerment, the project designs Integrated Management Plans tailored to the specific needs of each microregion. These plans enable self-management and empower communities to take ownership of conservation efforts. The project also focuses on building local capacity for monitoring and maintenance, promoting citizen science initiatives to assess the effectiveness of interventions, and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and best practices among communities.
Expansion and Networking: Finally, the project aims to expand its impact by networking with other stakeholders and communities to promote collective learning and action for environmental conservation and resilience building. Through networking events and partnerships, the project seeks to amplify its influence and encourage broader participation in environmental initiatives.
