WEEKLY WONDERS: w/c 20 May 2024

Hi First name,
RULES & CREATIVITY
*Where's the fun in being obedient?*
“The path of creativity doesn’t lie in restrictive and contained practices -
it lies in being free and instinctive.”
unseensketchbooks.co.uk

If you obey all the rules, you'll miss half the fun.
Katharine Hepburn

Over the last couple of weeks we've learnt that in order to break rules we need to first know them and respectfully acknowledge why they exist for us. This may have felt a bit ‘heavy’ - looking back and reflecting on where they have come from, and why we feel we should abide by them. So today lets lighten it up a bit!

Let's have some fun by breaking a few rules this week (and of course I mean the smaller rules we live by, the ones that won't cause harm or offence if broken).

Creative Thinking Prompts (w/c 22 May 2024)
1. What rules in your day-to-day life could you ‘break’ - just for the ‘fun' of it?

Here's some ideas:
  • Wear something inside out, or put your shoes on the wrong feet and see if anyone notices!
  • Skip down the street (usually only reserved for kids, but why? It feels great!)
  • Don't wear any make-up (or if that's your norm anyway, maybe go out with full make-up instead!)
  • Wear that item of clothing you're ‘saving for best’ which you feel amazing in. Wear it today and f**k anyone who questions why!
  • Eat your pudding first. (OMG my kids will love this one!)
  • Go for a walk and leave your phone at home (be un-contactable!)
  • Leave the piles of washing up over-night (go on, I dare you!)
  • Take a day off - mid-week (when you ‘should’ be working!)
2. What rules in your ‘creativity’ could you break - for the ‘fun' of experimentation?

Here's some ideas:
  • ‘Draw’ (or make marks) with something that's not meant for ‘drawing’, e.g. peel from a fruit or vegetable, a rusty nail, a dirty rubber, a teabag, mud, puddle water?!
  • Start some knitting or crochet and PURPOSELY go wrong! Allow those ‘wholes’ to be part of the work.
  • Sing at the top of voice and don't worry about being in tune!
  • Take a photo of something and break the ‘rule of thirds’.
  • Create a social media post which isn't perfect, and POST IT.
  • When you're next thinking of innovative ideas for your business, stop and think whether the opposite of an idea might actually be better (and more fun)!

Remember, as Rick Rubin says in ‘The Creative Act’:
“The laws of math and science are different from the rules we are looking at here. Those laws describe precise relationships in the physical world, which we know to be true by testing them against the world itself.
The rules artists learn are different.
They are assumptions, not absolutes. They are there to be tested.”
Rick Rubin
He goes on to say: ‘Challenge your assumptions and methods. You might find a better way. And even if it’s not better, you'll learn from the experience… You have nothin to lose."

You have nothing to lose, and a lot of silly fun to be gained!
Go and enjoy your week of rule-breaking!

And don't forget to post your thoughts in the group!

P.S. It’s our Co-Creativity session on Thursday at 7.30pm. Hope to see you there! Bring along anything you fancy doing while we chat, sup and encourage each others' creativity (and perhaps rule-breaking!😮)

“Wonder makes us more creative and more desirous of studying the world around us. It makes us humble, less materialistic, more generous, and better community members… Wonder makes us less stressed and feel like we have more time… Wonder quite simply makes us want to be better, more tolerant people.” (Parker, 2023)
