Welcome to the University of Rochester family!
Whether your student is brand new to college or is transferring in from another school, transitioning to the University of Rochester is a big adjustment—not only for your student, but for your entire family. We are here to provide support, answer questions, and give you the resources you need to help your student as they begin this new journey. Let's get your student ready for Rochester!

Please note: A version of this email was also sent to both your student's personal and University of Rochester email addresses. Moving forward, all emails will be sent to your student's UR email address only.

Save the date!
Our website includes a list of important dates for incoming students, including when they can register for fall classes, when academic advising begins this summer, and the dates of Fall Welcome Week. The fall arrival days (Monday, August 19 and Tuesday, August 20) are also included on this page. Your student will be assigned to one of these dates in early July when their housing assignment is finalized and sent to them. Please encourage your student to review these dates now and add them to their calendar.

Here's an overview of your orientation program.
Our orientation program is required for all incoming students and consists of two parts:

1. Rochester Ready: Designed to introduce your student to University academics and student life, this online orientation program consists of four components to be finished over the summer, before they arrive on campus in August.
  1. Complete the new student checklist.
  2. Watch the required resource videos and complete the corresponding modules.
  3. Connect with their academic advisors and register for their fall classes.
  4. Get to know their Orientation Leaders and incoming classmates.

2. Fall Welcome Week: This in-person program will provide you and your student the opportunity to connect with other incoming students and families, learn to navigate campus and academics, and celebrate some of our unique University of Rochester traditions from Monday, August 19 through Saturday, August 24.

Please note: Events for international parents and families will begin in the evening on Monday, August 19. Events for all families will begin on Tuesday, August 20 and run through the late afternoon on Wednesday, August 21. After the last parent and family program ends, you will be asked to depart campus.

Whew! That was a lot of information.
We get it – there are a lot of things to do this summer before your student arrives on campus. Don’t worry! We’ve got them covered. The new student checklist on our website is a comprehensive guide to all the required items your student needs to complete before their first semester begins (as well as some fun optional activities). Please ask your student to review the list now, as their first task (completing their housing and dining contract form) is due Monday, June 3.

You'll also be able to add the dates and deadlines from the checklist to your own personal calendar, using our checklist calendar subscription.

Here's how we'll connect this summer.
In addition to the new student checklist and the families page on our website, here are the other ways you can expect to connect with our team, the University, and other incoming families throughout this summer:

Rochester Ready newsletters: This newsletter will start sending to you in early June (along with anyone else your student has added as their parent or guardian in UR Student). Full of important resources and upcoming deadlines, you'll want to be sure to review each issue. (But if you happen to miss one, they will be posted on our website, too.)

Rochester Family newsletter: As a family member of a Rochester undergraduate student, you will also begin receiving the University’s Rochester Family newsletter in mid-June. Emailed monthly throughout the year, this newsletter is designed to keep parents and families informed about important University information. Past issues of these newsletters, along with a catalog of other incoming student communications, is available on our website.

Rochester Resource webinars: Learn more campus resources and services from University staff members in these live webinars throughout the summer. Registration is required.

Facebook group: Join other parents and family members of incoming students in this private Facebook group to ask questions, share tips, and find connections.

Welcome Celebrations: Meet other incoming students at these in-person and virtual events throughout the summer.

We're here for you.
Our team is available Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (EDT) at orientation@rochester.edu to assist with any questions or concerns you may have.

Additionally, Parent and Family Relations also offers helpful resources, contacts, and information as your family navigates this important transition. You can contact their office at urparents@rochester.edu.
