 pelvic pain

It’s Pelvic Pain Awareness Month! And for those who have had pelvic pain, you know what a literal pain in the a** it can be! I define pelvic pain as any discomfort from below your belly button, through the genitals, into the groin. It may be just one of these spots that's a problem, or all of them.

Pelvic pain often begins with a seemingly benign event: a UTI, a fall onto your tailbone, a change in your job, the stomach bug, or that nagging lower back pain you’ve always had. Or it can begin with something that makes a bit more sense: childbirth, perineal tearing, a hysterectomy, a sexual trauma, or an abdominal surgery. No matter how it starts, clients often end up in the same place - a dysregulated nervous system, distress about their symptoms, and “cross talk” between other areas of the body like the neck, shoulders, hips or back. Pain can morph into incontinence, constipation, and/or painful intercourse.

And can I tell you something? This is one of our FAVORITE things to treat at Uprise Pelvic Health. We often see changes in your breathing, face and voice from the beginning of the visit to the end. We love walking with you as you navigate your healing and helping you get back to what you love. We love helping you restore your relationships and reduce fear.

Lori and I recently took a continuing education course on the polyvagal approach to pelvic health and we’ve got some new tricks up our sleeves! So, if you or a loved one has been dealing with pelvic pain, please PLEASE reach out. We’d love to help you ourselves or steer you toward another practitioner to get you out of pain and back to life!

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Incontinence. Painful Sex. Constipation. Lower Back and Abdominal Pain: All possible symptoms that come with Pelvic Organ Prolapse. These topics definitely aren’t fun to live with and certainly aren't fun to talk about either! Not to mention the symptoms can be annoying and embarrassing, but thankfully, we are here to help navigate and address your pelvic health concerns.

Let’s chat about this.

You have a lot of organs living in close quarters in your pelvis: the bladder, uterus, and rectum. A prolapse occurs when the pelvic muscles + tissues fail to support these organs, causing them to bulge or sag into the vagina. Let's review the three most common types of prolapse:

1.] Cystocele: A prolapsed or “fallen” bladder. This is the most common type of prolapse. If the bladder begins to bulge into the vagina, it can become difficult for a woman to empty her bladder fully leading to urinary frequency or leakage. This can be an uncomfortable, heavy feeling, almost as if you are always wearing a tampon that's slightly dislodged!

2.] Rectocele: This occurs when the rectum can bulge into the vagina. When this happens, it can make it difficult to completely empty when pooping. Chronic constipation is a contributing factor as this can weaken your pelvic muscles over time.

3.] Uterine prolapse: occurs when pelvic floor muscles and ligaments stretch and weaken until they no longer provide enough support for the uterus. As a result, the uterus slips down into or protrudes out of the vagina. This is common after vaginal childbirth or during menopause when hormonal changes negatively impact your support structures.

Often surgery is recommended after a prolapse diagnosis. Individuals often make great progress with conservative treatment like physical therapy and/or pessary management. We can help chat through best options for you! Please don’t suffer alone!
