What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
Incontinence. Painful Sex. Constipation. Lower Back and Abdominal Pain: All possible symptoms that come with Pelvic Organ Prolapse. These topics definitely arenât fun to live with and certainly aren't fun to talk about either! Not to mention the symptoms can be annoying and embarrassing, but thankfully, we are here to help navigate and address your pelvic health concerns.
Letâs chat about this.
You have a lot of organs living in close quarters in your pelvis: the bladder, uterus, and rectum. A prolapse occurs when the pelvic muscles + tissues fail to support these organs, causing them to bulge or sag into the vagina. Let's review the three most common types of prolapse:
1.] Cystocele: A prolapsed or âfallenâ bladder. This is the most common type of prolapse. If the bladder begins to bulge into the vagina, it can become difficult for a woman to empty her bladder fully leading to urinary frequency or leakage. This can be an uncomfortable, heavy feeling, almost as if you are always wearing a tampon that's slightly dislodged!
2.] Rectocele: This occurs when the rectum can bulge into the vagina. When this happens, it can make it difficult to completely empty when pooping. Chronic constipation is a contributing factor as this can weaken your pelvic muscles over time.
3.] Uterine prolapse: occurs when pelvic floor muscles and ligaments stretch and weaken until they no longer provide enough support for the uterus. As a result, the uterus slips down into or protrudes out of the vagina. This is common after vaginal childbirth or during menopause when hormonal changes negatively impact your support structures.
Often surgery is recommended after a prolapse diagnosis. Individuals often make great progress with conservative treatment like physical therapy and/or pessary management. We can help chat through best options for you! Please donât suffer alone!
