May Prompt 2
URBAN
Urban (adjective): Relating to, situated or occurring in, or characteristic of, a town or city, esp. as opposed to the countryside.

The second prompt for this month is inspired by one of the subjects of impressionism: urban scenes such as from train stations, cafes, the theater and dance. What does urban look like now and what does it look like to us? I also thought it would be fun to explore something that is quite the opposite of our last prompt (floral). Here are some ideas to help you get started!

  • Hometown Glory I still remember seeing this dance routine choreographed by Mia Michaels danced by Katee & Joshua in season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance in 2008!
  • Urban Sketching If you've always liked these type of sketchbook spreads, this is a great time to try it yourself! Here is a comprehensive beginners guide to help you get started. Here are some examples of urban sketching by @mikedaikubara, @caitshouse, and @journal.to.go
  • People Watch A huge part of urban landscapes are the people and animals who call it home! Sit at a coffee shop or park and people watch. Do quick sketches of what you see or try to capture a scene before it changes or use cut outs from a magazine to recreate what you saw.
  • Urban Inspired Playlist Listen here (I also like the music video for Niall Horan's This Town)
  • Elements from your city Create a list of all the things that you love about your city including locations, landmarks, food/flowers/etc. that it may be known for. Use this list to create doodles or a collage, here's one example- you can do this in many styles and mediums! Or take a walk around your city and see what you notice and feel inspired by.
  • Maps Get inspiration from maps! Recreate your own (try a small area or favorite corner of town), use actual maps in your piece if you have any lying around, or take it in a more abstract direction.
  • Buildings are not only a great way to practice perspective and dimension, but shapes, colors, and details as well! Here are some images to spark some ideas.
  • Cityscape Acrylic Painting Try following along to this tutorial
  • Murals Check to see if you live by any murals and go check them out! I love what murals add to a city and the energy and color they bring. If you aren't able to get to one in person, google murals in one of your favorite cities or here are some images to browse through.
  • And here are some Impressionist urban scenes below:
