A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
I'm still thinking about the Blue Angels documentary my husband and I watched last night. It was absolutely amazing! I was so inspired by the precision, teamwork, and commitment to excellence of the pilots and crew members. If you don't have Amazon Prime Video, you can watch the trailer at this link. In the documentary, one of the Blue Angels pilots mentioned a Vince Lombardi quote. It struck me so deeply that I asked my husband to pause the video so I could write it down. I knew I wanted to share it with you. 👇🏻 |
|
This quote is so fitting for proofreaders, editors, copywriters, and anyone else who strives for perfection in their work. As Lombardi says, we won't be able to achieve perfection, but we can catch excellence along the way. |

Online Tools I Spotted This Week: |
|
I love discovering online tools that help me do my work more efficiently. I spotted two Chrome extensions this week and wanted to share them with you: - Night Shift Chrome Extension: Have you experienced eye strain while doing work on a computer screen? Have you noticed that warmer colors seem to be more soothing on the eyes? This Chrome extension allows you to shift the colors of your browser content to the warmer end of the color spectrum. I like how you can choose from a variety of colors and even change the opacity.
Here's a similar Chrome extension: Night Shift Mode - Cute Cursors Chrome Extension: This Chrome extension has nothing to do with proofreading or editing, but it's fun! This tool allows you to change your computer cursor to one of many fun designs, or you can even upload your own custom cursor. I like the watermelon one! 🍉

To dole out means to give out or distribute something, usually in small or measured amounts.💡 |

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor: |
|
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked: - What type of content do you proofread or edit? Nonfiction books and web content (blog articles, websites, email copy)
- Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I took a course through Proofed. One of my degrees is in linguistics, though, and I got the bulk of my training through that.
- What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? Clients! I love my clients. Collaborating is intensely rewarding and since most of my clients for editing and proofreading are authors who are experts in their fields, I learn a lot from working with them as well. Helping them share their message and seeing their successes makes my day.
- What causes you the most frustration in your business? Scope creep. And a lack of serial commas. ;)
- What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
Clear, friendly, and concise communication is the best policy in all things. Whether it's in onboarding a new client, sharing your edits, or working out miscommunications, being able to communicate patiently and kindly can make or break your business. BUT – it's definitely okay to be firm and direct, too!

Plant of the Week: Fiddle Leaf Fig |
|
I've finally found a spot where my six-foot fiddle leaf fig is happy. He likes the bright afternoon light in my dining room, and he loves to have dust wiped off his leaves with a damp cloth. Speaking of leaves, he just pushed out a brand-new leaf that's 16 inches long! 🤩 |

Let's keep growing together! |
