A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator:

It's June! I love the possibilities that a new month holds. Don't you?

I'm excited to welcome several new subscribers to The Leaflet this week. Thanks for joining our growing community! 🌱

Longtime readers know that I love to take photos of nature on walks with my beagle puppy, Harley. This week, I spotted some gorgeous hydrangeas on our path.

You might already know that the soil's acidity determines the color of hydrangea blossoms (more acidic = pink; more basic = blue). If the soil's pH is somewhere between acidic and basic, the flowers on one bush can be different colors. Amazing!

Are hydrangeas blooming in your area right now?

If you live in a part of the world where summer is approaching, now is a great time to be thinking about a backup proofreader or editor for your clients

Whether you're planning to be away on vacation or need a few days off for an event, having a list of trusted proofreaders or editors to serve as a backup for your clients is a great idea. This can be especially helpful if you work with clients who send you recurring proofreading or editing projects and would be in a bind if you were unable to help them for several days or weeks.

Here are a few ways a backup proofreader or editor can help you:
  • Keep Things Running Smoothly: A backup proofreader ensures your clients get consistent service even when you're on vacation.
  • Maintain High Standards: A backup helps maintain your work's quality and upholds your standards.
  • Enjoy Peace of Mind: A dependable backup allows you to relax and enjoy your time off without worries.
  • Impress Your Clients: Your clients will be thankful that you arranged for someone to help them while you're away.
Here are a few places to look for a backup proofreader or editor:
  • online communities you're a part of (like The Trellis)
  • professional networks
  • previous colleagues
  • proofreaders or editors you follow on social media
Do you have a backup proofreader or editor? I'd love to hear how having a trusted professional to fill in for you has helped you! Please reply to this email to let me know.

Online Tools I Spotted This Week:

I love discovering online tools that help me do my work more efficiently. I spotted two tools this week and wanted to share them with you:
  • Whimsical: This tool allows users to make flowcharts and mind maps with ease. It might be helpful as you think through the customer journey for your proofreading or editing clients. Sometimes mapping things out can help us check for gaps in our process.
  • VEED: This tool's tagline is “Create pro-level videos without pro-level skills.” Veed makes it easy to add text animations to videos (something that typically takes me forever). As a proofreader or editor, you could use this tool to create videos for social media or to walk your clients through your onboarding process.

Catch of the Week:

The word “boulder” was likely derived from the Swedish word "bullersten" meaning "noisy stone" due to the noise it would make when rolling or as water roared around it in a stream.💡

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor:
Lezlee from Read. Write. Engage

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? Primarily nonfiction: books, blogs, websites, business materials, history, nonprofit
  • Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I completed training with Proofread Anywhere and have continued to take education courses through the Editorial Freelancers Association and Louise Harnby's editors' marketing program.
  • What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? Helping my clients succeed by fine-tuning their work to share with their audience
  • What causes you the most frustration in your business? Not as many clients as I'd like—yet.
  • What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
Dress for success, even when working from home! It helps you focus on work and reduce the many distractions of a home office. It helps the family realize you're "at work." It can be as simple as a change of shirt to a more "work" style—something other than a T-shirt or your PJs!

Plant of the Week: Jade Pothos
Image item
I have several pothos varieties in my collection, but I spotted this jade pothos this week and decided to bring him home. He's pretty easy to please and will thrive in most lighting conditions. One of the only ways to harm him is to water him too often. What a beauty!

Let's keep growing together!
