WEEKLY WONDERS: w/c 10 June 2024

Hi First name,
BACK TO BASICS: Noticing/wondering/being curious about…
*PATTERN*
“Curiosity fuels creativity.
If you can notice and wonder, you can create.”
Pat Zietlow Miller
It’s my birthday this week 🥳, so I’ve chosen a FAVOURITE thing of mine to use as a prompt this week - PATTERN!

I studied Surface Pattern Design at degree level, and I remember before I signed up for the course being in awe of the work from previous students, and just loving the idea of creating patterns!
Here is where I SHOULD insert a photo of me studying Pattern Design, but it was that long ago that I seriously have NO photos - or none that are easily found! 🤦‍♀️

But one thing I did slightly differently to most people on the course was to design my patterns with an object in mind. I always designed and thought about the pattern in 3D - and how it would interact with the object it was adorning.

So why am I telling you this? Mainly to pre-empt the direction of the prompts.

Creative Thinking Prompts (w/c 10 June 2024)
I’d like you to think about pattern on objects that you wouldn’t necessarily notice had a pattern - the non-obvious things; the things that you wouldn’t think mattered (when actually a lot of thought has gone into designing them!)

To give you some examples:

1. Drain covers - they’re not all the same! See some examples below…
2. Patterns on public transport seats - the tube in London has specific designs for specific lines.
3. The underside of your shoes - virtually unseen and frequently gets dirty, but the patterns are all different (note how these patterns are seen in relief through footprints in mud, snow, or when wet!)
4. In panes of glass - some are, of course, very decorative, but others are more utilitarian in their design (but nonetheless they were ‘designed’!)
5. Kitchen or loo roll - Yes, have you ever noticed the different patterns?!

So this week, go out and seek the hidden patterns in the world

Take photos and keep an album of them to share with the group, or use it for inspiration.

And of course, I haven’t even mentioned the patterns you can find in nature! By all means, notice those too!

It is amazing how much you are surrounded by patterns once you start to notice them!

If you take photos, think about how they could be transformed into patterns.

Here are two very different pattern designers who I know (I did work experience with Ella Doran, and Ruth Holly was a fellow stall-holder at a few trade shows I did back in the day). I love both their work for different reasons, but both of them use photography to find inspiration and then use those images to create patterns, which end up adorning multiple objects. ❤️

So that's all for today, from your pattern-loving, pattern designer (who would love to sit all day and design patterns!😂)…

P.S. Here’s the drain cover patterns I noticed on my Wonder Walk the other day… Wax-rubbing anyone?? 🤪

P.P.S. Just another reminder to get your ticket for our next INSPIRATION DAY in Saltaire on 5 July. I need everyone to book on my Wednesday 26 June if possible - and let me know any dietary requirements!
You can book your ticket here and don't forget to use code WONDERCLUB to get your £15 discount.

“Wonder makes us more creative and more desirous of studying the world around us. It makes us humble, less materialistic, more generous, and better community members… Wonder makes us less stressed and feel like we have more time… Wonder quite simply makes us want to be better, more tolerant people.” (Parker, 2023)
