Being ok with the now…
Everywhere I turn lately, it seems like the word “elevate” keeps popping up: in ads telling us to elevate our decor, in recipe intros describing an elevated take on a dish, in travel articles pitching an elevated experience, and in social media posts for clothing, design, makeup, and even gardening, etc etc. Seems like there's such a collective urge to make everything soooo lofty and amazing.
I’m not exactly sure why it’s been irking me so much. Perhaps it has something to do with our culture's constant quest for everything to be more / better / perfect. In trying to think of what the opposite of being elevated might be, the idea of being “rooted” came to mind. But then I realized rooting isn’t always beneficial, either - weeds take root, bad habits can take root, and so on.
So instead, I’m just going to focus on appreciating how things are right now, remembering to be grateful for whatever state they're in, and just being. Not everything needs to be hustled to the next level. From now on, I’ll try to mentally swap in “appreciate” every time I’m confronted with the call to elevate the hundreds of things we do each day.
And while there’s nothing wrong with working toward a goal, right now I’m feeling the need to pause and truly consider everything that's come along in life so far. Whether it’s a brief walk outdoors with a friend, lingering for a few extra minutes in a sunny spot, spending an afternoon tending to your garden, or preparing something simple to eat, here’s hoping we can all find a bit of calm to appreciate all of the wonderfulness that already surrounds us.
Xoxo,
Kristen
