…do we all need a bedside cart?

Adding to my list of products that I feel the pregnancy industry has been gatekeeping (ahem, body pillows and relatively aesthetic recliners) = bedside carts. Since the Instagram algo sorted out that I’m pregnant, I’ve received approximately 200 reels & posts about how to stock a bedside cart with postpartum/baby care essentials. Well, I fell prey to this messaging (it's kind of a genius concept, after all), with an unexpected outcome: the realization that a bedside cart is borderline essential, pregnancy aside.

I bought the “you've seen it everywhere” $40 IKEA Raskog cart, the exact cart from the photo above (in yellow, because I'm a color glutton) and filled it as such…

😴
Top shelf:
Nighttime self care stuff (Bink bottle, magnesium supps, body lotions galore, eye mask, a claw clip, tennis ball for achey spots, etc.)

📚
Middle shelf:
THE LIBRARY (currently: On Thriving, The Ministry of Time, The Mystery Guest, Carrie Soto is Back…because why read one book when you could not finish four at once?) & my reading light

☁️
Bottom shelf:
Cozy blankets and my iPad…for journaling (this iPad journal template has been the cutest way to document my life/pregnancy journey) and occasionally Love Island

Sure, all of these things could clutter up your nightstand or be stashed in a drawer (not very handy, at all). But the key to the cart is you don’t have to get out of bed (!!) to access everything you need for your nighttime routine. It sounds lazy, but I swear, this cart is actually making me more diligent about taking my nighttime supplements and reading instead of scrolling my doom device phone. And generally, it motivates me to spend my evenings upstairs in bed winding down rather than watching trash shows downstairs (bless them, though, they have their purpose).

Let’s pleeeease democratize the bedside cart: Is it a genius postpartum hack? I think so, and I look forward to my cart making that transition in a few months time. But for now, it's a cozy person essential. And btw, I imagine it'd be a helpful addition for anyone living with a chronic condition who would benefit from having pills, devices or care products closer at hand.

We need to talk about goddess time: A few years ago, I heard a very wise individual mention the idea of “goddess time” on a podcast. (If you know the source of the goddess time concept, please let me know so I can credit them!) It’s the idea that after you wrap up your work/responsibilities for the day, you do something to reset your brain before you transition into the evening: walking, meditating, putting on a favorite record, reading a few pages in a comforting book, taking an epsom salt bath, preparing a decadent li’l snack—anything analog that brings you joy (aka, not hanging out on your phone). We’re often so quick to log off/clock out of work and go straight into our evening to-dos, and even a few minutes of goddess time (what a name) is a really lovely ritual, if you can swing it, to decompress before the dinner shift / anything your evening may have in store that demands your energy and attention.

Before the weekend: Open up your to-do list and delete at least three items. And then literally never do those things. It will be fine and you could probably use that time back to loaf, look out the window, or phone a friend. 💖

A HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to our question a few weeks ago about whether or not non-toxic product recs from Amazon or Target would be helpful to you. The overwhelmmmming response: No Amazon products, please! We hear you. Let’s not feed the beast.

Responses were more mixed on Target, with a number of “yes, please!”-es. So with that, Addie curated a handful of brands that meet Sway specs for home goods and textiles to help you shop with intention on your next Target run.

Will we continue this occasional series on better/non-toxic buys at Target? IDK. Let us know what you think. We’ve typically been in the business of featuring makers and brands that match our sustainability values, and big box retailers are a little gray, to say the least—though Target has some great initiatives (and products).

At Sway, we love sharing brands that are the best of the best in terms of healthy materials selection, third-party certifications for health, and overall quality.

However, despite having all of these resources at my fingertips, I still find myself running to Target to pick things up here and there. We’ve been looking into Sway-approved brands to help you shop more in alignment with your values at the places you already frequent. So, here are three finds from Target to look for on your next trip/order:

Purity Home: These sheets are certified to both the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, aka the double-cert, gold standard for bedding at Sway. And the price is right: These 300 thread count sheets come in at $65 for a queen size bed! You’ll also see that these sheets have exceptional customer reviews on the Target site.

Fabdreams: These towels are crafted using 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and are OEKO-TEX® Made in Green certified. Clean products that keep you clean! No product reviews on the site yet, though, so we’ll be eager to hear your take if you give these a go.

Crane Baby: I am so obsessed with Crane Baby’s Avery Organic collection, featuring sheets and swaddles and this super cute Muslin Bib Set. This set features three charming bibs, each hand-crafted from GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton with the sweetest little patterns on them.
