Few things in life are less enjoyable than job-hunting. Repeating the same information from your CV into lengthy online forms, the sting of rejection, the well-meaning platitudes from friends.
Reading the words “we have decided to proceed with another candidate” day in and day out is enough to get you down.
Some perfectly appropriate responses include wallowing in self-pity, eating a block of Tony's Chocolonely and complaining to friends. But when you’re ready to get back in the saddle and try everything you can to land a gig, here’s where to start:
1. Do a CV Audit
This may sound obvious, but ask for feedback from the employers who rejected your application. Your instinct might be to protect your ego and put the job behind you as soon as the “no, thanks” email lands in your inbox, but understanding why you weren't selected can help you identify areas for improvement.
If you’re getting knocked back at the initial stage before the chance for feedback, seek out other industry leaders for feedback. If you have friends in your field of work, ask them if they’ll take a look at your CV and cover letter with a critical eye. Ask them to review your answers to a set of interview questions before you send them off; perhaps you’re not formatting your responses in the best way or could be focusing on more relevant examples. If you’re getting turned down at the interview stage, conduct mock interviews covering potential questions.
2. Seek Professional Advice
If you don’t have many close contacts in your industry, peruse LinkedIn for people with the type of job you want. Reach out, let them know you admire their work, explain your situation and ask if they would be willing to offer some advice.
It’s always better to bring something of value to the table, so offer a knowledge exchange or let them know you’re happy to share their LinkedIn posts or send helpful resources. They might simply offer their help, but make it clear that you respect their time and would like the interaction to be as reciprocal as possible. If they decline or don’t respond - hey, you’re already in the trenches battling rejection! You can handle it!
