Happy first day of summer from the Northern Hemisphere! Somehow I am already over the heat and bugs and ready for fall 🤣 but will try to enjoy the perfect no jacket evening weather and longer days (the sun has been setting around 9:15PM here in MI!) Here are some ideas and shares to kick off the season with!

5 CREATIVE PROJECTS TO TRY THIS SUMMER

  1. Join me for the 3rd annual Summer Sketchbook Un-Slump! This a free 5 week email series to help inspire and encourage creativity and exploration in the pages of our sketchbooks! You can sign up here. The first prompt will be sent out on July 19th. If you've joined before and haven't unsubscribed, you don't need to sign up again and will be good to go! I have new ideas and prompts to share with you and I can't wait!
  2. Document your days with a mark a day
    • Make a mark a day on the same piece of paper and continue building
    • Split your paper into different sections and fill one in each day
    • Find inspiration in the things you saw or did, in how you feel, in a color, texture, pattern, or shape
    • Decide how many days you'd like to do this for. I suggest 7 days--enough to build on and doable! You can also do it for the duration of a vacation or trip, a month, the entire summer, or 100 days if you want a challenge :)
  3. Create outside Try shadow art, plein air, make temporary art with stones, fallen leaves, and branches
  4. Use your photos If you have a ton on your phone, pick your favorites, email them to yourself, download them, place them on a word doc or Illustrator (resize if needed), and print them out. Use them in a collage (mix with other collage elements like cut outs from a magazine if you'd like) or cut the photos into strips and weave them together.
  5. Draw each other This is NOT about knowing how to draw portraits or making the best art so don't be intimidated! Just try your best and most importantly, laugh and have trust the process! Check out how fun this can be :)

SUMMER SHARES
  • I made a Summer Mix Tape for you! Side A - Songs For The Road and Side B - Summer Jamz Enjoy! I'd love to know what your favorite summer songs are!
  • To The Mountains by Lizzie McAlpine This is on the Songs For The Road playlist but I wanted to share it on its own--I recently discovered it on Instagram and think it's so beautiful!
  • The Summer I Turned Pretty I am hooked--this has so many more layers and storylines than I thought that involve all the characters. It's such a great summer watch but have the kleenex ready. I also love that Rachel Blanchard is one of the moms, I remember watching her as Cher in the TV version of Clueless!
  • Sunscreen has come a long way! I've been using Supergoop! and I really like the way it goes on, how quickly it absorbs, and how it doesn't have a white residue or feel sticky like the sunscreen I grew up with! I got one of their starter sets to see if I liked it first before committing to a larger size.
  • Chillz Dog Cooling Mat And something for your furry friends! Valentine has one of these and she loves sleeping on it! TBH I don't know if it's because of the cooling, the texture, or both, but I'm just happy she uses it and that it does have a cooling effect. This is an Amazon affiliate link.
Whatever season you're in (weather wise and personally), I hope the days ahead bring inspiration, rest, creativity, and adventure!

PS: I finished my 100 Day Project! I'll be sharing more in the next newsletter. In the meantime, you can watch the tape peel on IG or TT!

PPS: We've done a lot of traveling this past weekend: VA to PA to MI--right in time for this heatwave lol so we've been hunkering down with the AC at the AirBnB. It's kind of nice to have a break from driving though! On the way we met lots of cool folks and I got to take Val to the National Park of her ancestors, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and here she is with Mr. Rogers in Pittsburgh.

I also updated our map--grey w/Val means we went here before together but not on this specific road trip and grey w/out Val means I've been there without her--but will try to change that :) 27/50 states so far!
