This week's AUTHOR interview: |
SFN: What’s your favorite under-appreciated book? |
TM: That will have to be Boy Meets Girl by Meg Cabot! This book stands out because it's part of a highly creative and entertaining series where the entire narrative is told through a mix of journal entries, emails, receipts, and text messages. This unique format adds a dynamic and modern twist to storytelling. What makes Boy Meets Girl particularly special is its humor and charm. Cabot's witty writing and the authentic voices of her characters create a delightful reading experience. The book is not just about romantic entanglements but also explores themes of friendship, career challenges, and personal growth. |
SFN: Do you recall a specific book you connected with viscerally as a young reader or as an adult? |
TM: The book that made me want to become an author was the House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. There's something indescribable about the way this series resonated with me. I saw myself in the protagonist, Zoey Redbird, and I recognized my friends in her close-knit group of vampyres. The challenges Zoey faced as she learned to become a high priestess felt both relatable and inspiring. Unlike typical vampire books I'd read before, the House of Night series offered a fresh and unique perspective. The world-building, the intricate plot, and the depth of the characters captivated me in a way no other book had. The series didn't just entertain me; it spoke to me on a deeper level, making me feel seen and understood. To this day, I still have the books on my shelf. They serve as a reminder of the powerful impact a well-told story can have and inspire me to continue to create my own stories that might one day resonate with readers just as deeply. |

SFN: When you read for pleasure, what is your go-to genre? |
TM: When I read for pleasure, my go-to genre is mostly romance. There's something incredibly comforting and enjoyable about diving into love stories, watching characters navigate their emotions, and finding their happily-ever-afters. However, lately, I've been expanding my horizons and getting into horror. I've developed a particular fondness for Grady Hendrix's work; his ability to blend horror with humor and compelling narratives is captivating. In addition to horror, I've started exploring suspense as well. Jeneva Rose and Frieda McFadden are currently on my to-read list. It's refreshing to read outside the romance genre and experience the thrill and tension of suspenseful plots. |
SFN: It's the last day on earth, money is no exception, where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with? |
TM: I'd go to Florida and hop on Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville cruise. I've always wanted to go on a cruise, it's been on my bucket list forever. Regardless of the mixed reviews, I can't resist the allure of this cruise. I can't think of a better way to spend our last day than relaxing with my family by the ocean. I imagine us lounging on the deck, sipping frozen margaritas, and soaking in the sun. We would have a blast on the Margaritaville cruise and make some unforgettable memories together. Onboard, we'd indulge in all the cruise has to offer—enjoying delicious food, listening to live music, and perhaps even participating in some of the fun activities and entertainment. With the ocean as our backdrop, we'd relish the beauty of nature, the sound of the waves, and the warm, tropical breeze. |
