Week Three of the Summer Success Program is about elevating your mindset by learning to work with your thoughts. Have you stopped to listen to what that little voice inside your head has been saying lately?
I have, and it's not pretty!
As humans, we have upwards of 50,000 - 70,000 thoughts per day, and with our built-in negativity bias, many of them are not nice. One of my favorite things about a daily mindfulness practice is learning to become an observer of our thoughts without judgment.
If you want to start implementing your vision of well-being, you'll need some good thoughts.
This week's assignment is two-fold. First, try noticing your thoughts for one day. Write them down. Just like you created your Habit Inventory, we're creating our Thought Inventory. What thoughts are you thinking over and over? Are your thoughts helpful?
Next, we practiced using a Thought Ladder, a tool that helps us gradually shift our thoughts from negative to positive, thereby enhancing our mindset. That's right! You can choose your thoughts. You don't have to stay stuck in old patterns, fall into constant rumination or merely exist on auto-pilot.
When you bring awareness to your thoughts, you can begin choosing slightly better versions of each one. For instance, instead of 'I'm not good enough', you can practice thinking 'I'm improving every day'. Instead of fixating on things like worry, doubt and negative storylines, you can train your mind to choose better options.
Realizing that we have the ability to make a choice, even in our thoughts, is truly liberating. It opens up a world of possibilities and a path towards a more positive mindset.
