AUBERGE RESORTS 06.23.2024 |
What: 140-acre former tree nursery (and a dairy farm before that) turned immersive resort, set in the Hudson Valley. Sit Score: 10/10 |
- Why here?: It's the total package. A five-tool sit. A perfect sit. The scenery, vibes, food, service and design are all unmatched. I'm no resort guy. I like being unshackled: getting out, exploring cityscapes, and hitting all the different scenes, but I found myself not wanting to leave. The scenery will fully transport you. Nestled in an open prairie with tall grasses and wildflowers, the resort sits near Shawangunk Kill – the river that runs along the property's western woods – and the Shawangunk Mountain as the backdrop. Where are you? Gardiner, NY. But this has to be Heaven.

- The vibes were luscious. The “Great Porch” is the showstopper for me. A covered alfresco communal area between the “Shop” and the restaurant, it has a massive firepit to make any weather feel just right. It feels... primal – humans gathered around a fire in the openness of nature. Every seat on the porch is unique, but gracious with various vantage points. Bands at night, gypsy jazz, s'mores, and sunsets. An ode to Danish design punctuated by upstate chic modern details. Sheesh. It's HOT!

- The food is de facto Farm-to-Table. The working farm – a 5-minute walk from the porch – provides the ingredients. We took a tour of the entire regenerative farm operation with my new man crush, Farmer Will. It's inspiring to meet someone doing something they love and sharing their passion with patrons. Choose your egg from the hen house and then deliver it to the chef for your omelet. No joke. The freshest vegetables and berries. It's the connectedness of the entire experience that moved me. "Welcome to Wildflower Farms, here's your welcome drink made from our strawberries grown in that field." Simple and lovely: the land, those ingredients, you, your people, and the staff. THE STAFF…
- The staff were pros. Attentive, anticipating, adroit. These folks got after it. They always made you feel welcomed and taken care of. You see it from the start… you arrive and it's a signature welcome drink, a hand-rinsing ritual, a layout of the grounds and programming schedule. Bravo, Auberge. Hiring humans who are passionate about service and have that "How can I help?" energy. Rain in the forecast? "Take an umbrella, you might need it."
- The design was dialed in. Every detail considered. Ward and Gray handled the interiors with masterclass execution. It was natural, of the place, inspired by the surroundings, and felt one of a kind. Four hundred custom pieces were designed specifically for Wildflower Farms. It was elevated, but soft and homey. The robes, the cushions, lighting, tilework, and accessories created a lookbook-like experience. Everywhere you turned, there were new moments to enjoy.
