A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator:

Happy weekend, friends, and welcome to summer (if you live in the northern hemisphere)!

It certainly feels like summer around here. Man, is it hot! 🥵 I heard about the NWS HeatRisk tool this week. It provides a forecast risk of heat-related impacts across the U.S. My area is in the orange section right now. How about you?

New Tutorial in The Proofreader Greenhouse!

In issue 036 of The Leaflet, I mentioned that I recently discovered the Arc internet browser. As promised, I've created a video tutorial to tell you all about it!

If you're a TPG member, the 11-minute tutorial is already in the My Products tab of your account. Just click the green button in the upper right corner of the TPG website, log in to your account, and go to the My Products tab. Look for the lesson called Arc Internet Browser: A Great Tool for Proofreaders and Editors.

By the way, if you're not a TPG member yet, it's free! Click here to apply.

For the past three weeks, I've been using the Arc browser instead of my old standby, Google Chrome. The differences are refreshing! ✨

Online Tools I Spotted This Week:

I love discovering online tools that help me do my work more efficiently. I spotted two tools this week and wanted to share them with you:
  • Google Books Ngram Viewer: While proofreading a transcript this week, I struggled to find out whether the correct phrase is “God as my witness” or “God is my witness.”  I posted my question in our TPG community, The Trellis, and my friend Sara suggested that I check Google's Ngram Viewer. This powerful tool analyzes the frequency of words or phrases in books from the 1500s to 2019. According to this tool, the phrase “God is my witness” is used more frequently in books.

  • Emoji Kitchen: I just heard about this tool this week, and I've laughed so hard at some of the emoji combinations. Just go to Google and search “emoji kitchen.” Then enter two emojis and see how the tool puts them together. To test it out, try putting the skull emoji (💀) with the dog emoji (🐶). So cute!

Catch of the Week:

A "wench" is an old term for a young woman, often a servant, while a "winch" is a tool used for lifting or pulling heavy objects.💡

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor:

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked:
  • What type of content do you proofread or edit? Web content (blogs, articles, copy), fiction and non-fiction books, academic research and scholarship (gender studies and sociology)

  • What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? In true word-nerd fashion, I am deeply in love with the process of honing and refining language. My favorite part of editing is getting to know an author's voice and working to understand their audience, intentions, and goals. I let these things guide me toward being the most effective and supportive editor I can be for each client.

  • What causes you the most frustration in your work? Two things I'm struggling with in my editing business right now are 1) finding enough clients and 2) finding clients who can afford to pay a professional editor. Once I've nailed down a contract with a client, there's very little about the process I don't enjoy.

  • What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
One of my favorite editor tips is to always remember to prioritize the writer's authentic voice. As editors, we're responsible for helping each piece of writing be all that it can be, but not at the expense of removing the creator's imprint. As I'm editing, I always try to focus on making the biggest impact with the fewest changes, rather than covering a page in red to make it suit my personal style.

Plant of the Week: Ficus Robusta
Image item
This plant lives outside on my deck during the spring and summer months. A couple weeks ago, I spotted a tiny praying mantis on one of the leaves. I've named him Manny (like the character in the Pixar movie A Bug's Life).

He feeds on a variety of insects, including pests like aphids, caterpillars, and beetles.  Every time I go outside to check on this plant, Manny is still there. He's so cute!

Let's keep growing together!
