Friends—

How are we all surviving the heat wave? I've done my best to avoid any meetings and commitments through the week and even changed up my daily walk schedule for the early AM to avoid the brutal heat. I stayed out one day for way too long and ended up with a crazy migraine or was I experiencing heat stroke. 🥵

I can hear the current thunderstorms as I write this, so hopefully we receive some reprieve for the remainder of the week! Stay cool and hydrated friends!

weekly highlight—

I don't follow fashion weeks too closely but I will always stop and review the latest couture looks. Day 1 and 2 of Fall 2024 did not disappoint! Above are some favorites by Thom Browne, Elie Saab, Rahul Mishra, and Schiaparelli.

But that Thom Browne piece really did it for me—the structure/tailoring, the pleats, the embroidery work on the anatomy portion. Whew. Stunning. Relatedly, I recently came across this substack post on the history of Elsa Schiaparelli's exploration of corporeal fashion and surrealism and her early collaborations with Salvador Dalí including her piece, Skeleton Dress. The substack author, Sabine Stent, is worth following as she writes on women surrealist artists & their influence on film and culture.

Lastly, in a world where Elie Saab exists, why do we have such failed looks on the red carpet. I would get married in that black dress or even the one on the left honestly. 😌

Name a better trio!

I still remember the anxiety of the first episode of season one—it was so palpable, considering I was trying to wind down for the evening and start a new show. But wow, glad I stuck with it and glad Hulu had the sense to drop all episodes for a proper binge!

Are we all binging this weekend? *In unison now* Yes, Chef!

We're TALKING ABOUT—
QNS to the WRLD THE GLOBAL RUNDOWN
Y'all know by now that I am a Mara Hoffman stan. A nice long read but I loved this particular quote, "I’ve been following a specific strategy for the last 24 years. It’s a phenomenal experiment to do something that you haven’t exactly planned—it’s an act of deep trust. The undertone of everything is that I’m here to serve—I’m here to create art, and I’m here to be with women. The clothes have been this gorgeous translator, and I don’t know if I’ll ever find something as universal [to speak through]. But it’s okay, because I’ve done that work already.” 👗
Wow. An incredible mobilization of the people to protect their democratically elected President against a US-backed coup. Important to note that Bolivia is known for its lithium reserves and this coup occurred on the heels of a recent Bolivia-Russia agreement for lithium extraction. 🔋
The Politics That Derailed Congestion Pricing in New York via The New Yorker     Interesting that mass transit ridership numbers are not back to pre-pandemic levels but car traffic into the city is above its pre-pandemic numbers 🚗
“Most of the protesters are young people, college students calling themselves the Gen Z, who galvanized much of the opposition to finance bill 2024 on social media.” The power of the people, the power of Gen Z - we love to see it! 😌
A clash between Chinese coast guard personnel and Filipino troops in the South China Sea 🌊
Uhm, disturbing and very much giving, “it places the lotion in the basket👀🐑

For the Plot by melissa alam
Melissa Alam, who is a Lilith community member (!), just dropped a new podcast, called For the Plot! A Philly-native and the founder of a brand design studio, I first met Melissa when she stopped by our pop-up at Jungly during a visit to NYC last spring. I've since been living vicariously through her IG shares on her fun travels and adventures thru Colombia and CDMX.

Her first episode explores all the things leading up to her decision to move out of the US; everything from burn out, depression, dating life struggles, and an overall sense of stagnancy, that I feel a lot of us have been feeling in recent years.

“Moving abroad has been so helpful in terms of the woman that I want to be and also the potential that I see within myself when it comes to starting a podcast. Not sure I would have started a podcast in the mindset I was in a year ago."

3 things you can do to support a fellow community member!
  1. Follow Melissa on IG ❤️
  2. Listen & Subscribe to her podcast 🎙️🎧
  3. Hire her for all your brand design needs 👩🏾‍💻
